No Alternator Light 200 1984

This light just recently stopped illuminating when the key is turned on. I read in the Bentley Manual that the system will not charge unless this light goes on.

Any advice is appreciated,

Steve

Check to see if the alternator frame is grounded to the engine. On my 1980 there is a wire that runs from the alternator frame to the engine block. Since the alternator has rubber bushings in the mounting arrangement, it is insulated from the block. If the wire breaks, in my case, corroded away, the alternator does not charge the battery, and the alternator light does not come on!. You don't know you have a problem until your lights go dim and you car stops after the battery is discharged.

    Hi Steve,

I'm not by any means an expert in the matter but I kinda doubt that the system will not charge if a light (on the dash?) doesn't go on. What I personally would do is use a voltmeter to check the drop across the battery to see if its dropping or not, if its dropping noticable then the charging system probably isn't working. If you are around ~13 for the potentual difference then I wouldn't worry about it. Do you have a battery gauge in the car?

Re: No Alternator Light 200 1984

The Bently Manual says the charging system will not work when this light is not on. I confirmed by testing the voltage across the battery terminals with the car running, i.e. 12.5 +/- volts. I realized that the only light on when I turned the key was the oil pressure light. I excercised wires around the alternator, battery terminal and the junction box near the 25 amp fuel injection fuse. I also pulled and then reconnected the ignition switch harness under the dash. I then turned the key and had all my lights back including the alternator. Checked the volatage across the terminals, which was now 14.4 +/- indicating that the system was working and that Bentley is accurate.

I may never know wheere the problem arose, but have learned tht in this old brick, the majority of these types of problem are related to fuses and/or bad connections.

      Thanks for your help
