Oil going somewhere - fast! 700 1987

It is an '87 turbo, and has leaked a bit of oil for a long time. Suddenly, this week, the oil is going very quickly, about 2 litres per 100 km! The car is not smoking. There is some oil in the intercooler. Any suggestions?

Re: Oil going somewhere - fast! 700 1987

I have an 88 turbo wagon and I'm also loosing oil. I took it to a Volvo

mechanic and he replace a seal on the oil return line to the turbo.

Under the oil filter there are two lines. I'm not sure what they are called, but one was leaking and a seal was replaced. Still leaks, but not

to the point that it drips. I called the mechanic and he suggested putting teflon tape around the treads. Note, the line is bolted on (compression fitting). I'll try this today.

I go through a quart every 500 miles and according to the FAQ the current leak could cause this.

Look underneath for wetness - transmission rearward. Rear main seal very likely source...neglected crankcase breather may have caused seal (regardless of condition) to pop out of place.

Other good possibility on turbo is the turbo oil return pipe where it enters the block just above the oil pan, O-ring goes bad and makes big sloppy mess.

You may need to wash things off and see what area gets wet first.
