Automatic Transmission Fluid Change 200 1983

Hi all!

I plan on changing my ATF on my automatic '83 245. I don't have the Owner's manual with me, but I remember it states that the fluid requirement is something other than ATF; it is a 3-letter abbreviation. Does my wagon use a special fluid? Or regular ATF will do?

One thing I'm concerned about is what may happen if I change my fluid. Right now, it seems to shift smoothly, and the fluid looks pinkish and "healthy." The car does seem to make a clunk-like sound followed by a jerk when I shift from "P" to "R" when cold. Other than that, all seems fine. Anyhow, should I change the fluid; I bought this car recently, so I kind of want to change the auto fluid just so I know where it stands.

BTW, I also plan on bringing up the OD problem to the mechanic. Is there anything I should know before I get talked into spending $$$ on something that could be really cheap to fix? I think my OD problem is more electrical than mechanical, is that an easy, CHEAP fix? Thanks.

Regarding your overdrive problem, I'll share my experience to date.

The OD relay is ~$50 from a dealer, and is located behind front dash. Remove glove box and reach in. HOWEVER, before you replace it, you might want to consider that the problem is the overdrive solenoid (~$230 dealer, ~$135 other than volvo) and its 2 gaskets (dime sized and slightly smaller). If the solenoid is producing more current than it is supposed to, then that current will blow out your relay and waste your $50. I've been told that the solenoid is easy to find and replace, but I've wasted this morning looking for it. The local dealer was nice enough to fax me the parts diagram of the trans, but I believe it is for the wrong vehicle (I have an '89 240 auto, and was sent parts page PV 435 59077 with the following at the top of the page "P-021884300650C US 1997-09-09-2000-11-18", which I am guessing says it is a particular drawing last revised in 1997 and printed as of today.

Good luck. I am seeking advice from anyone who may know where that danged solenoid is, specifically. Thanks in advance.

    U. Duck:

Before you take the brick to a mechanic, check your overdrive relay. May just need to be resoldered, following the approved Don Foster method (check the archives).
