Leaking Headlight 200 1991

I have the typical late 240 headlight problem, water is getting in the headlight. Some seven years ago I drilled an 1/8" hole in the underside of the plastic lens to drain the two inches of water that had accumulated in two years. That seemed to do it, however; I was driving in a down pour and the bulb burst because it got wet. Most 240's with the plastic lights seem to have the same problem. Junk yard cars always have the lights removed first, the junk man confirmed my observation. Any suggestions?

I guess you can rebuild and glue and putty. Or you can throw money at it. ipd sells Cibie headlights that I think will fit. $65 each.

Or, in the best Down East tradition, you could create your own "wicked good" retrofit.

My friends 90 sedan had this problem. I took care of it by removing the

headlight unit. Then remove the chrome trim from the unit. I carefully

pried and cut the seal around the unit so I could remove the plastic

lens. Once off I cleaned the lens then used an RTV sealer to make my own

gasket. This sealed the lens completely and they haven't had any more water

in three years since I did that for them.

Personally the Cibie lights that Volvo uses are not very well made and the plastic isn't the highest quality. I have early 240 turn signals on my car and they are made by Hella. They seal better and look nicer to me than

the Cibie lights which use three screws to hold the lens on, and they use cheaper light bulbs.

Steven, How is the H2O getting in your headlight? I had a crack in one of the headlight covers. I put some locktite gap filling superglue on the outside and it seemed to wick into the crack pretty well. At least I haven't had any more water in it for the last couple of years.
