no power to in tank pump 200

Cool, i took out the in tank assembly, fixed the hose (it was crumbly) and the in tank is not seized, because i stuck a screwdriver in there and i could easily turn the fins. So i tested it, and is has no power going to it. Where are some common places i can check? Should i keep more than a 1/2 tank of gas in the meantime?

sorry, the car is an 83 240dl, and i tested it with the car running. Still nothing.

The has to be running to check voltage to the pump. With the key in the ON position isn't good enough.

See if the pump will work with a secondary 12 Volts. That is to say disconnect it from it's normal plug, and run wires direct from the battery to the pump. Because it spins with a screw driver doesn't mean it works.

If you have the sedan, make sure the wires aren't broken in the trunk. they only hold them down with a piece of tape before they get to the plastic shield. You should be able to check continuity from the fuse (Fuse#4?) to the connector and make sure the wire isn't broken.

Try checking the voltage first WITH THE CAR RUNNING.

You didn't mention what year your brick is, so I'll tell how a '90 works just in case it's close.

Both pumps are driven together by the same relay. Well, actually, it is a pair of relays inside the same cover, one of which is for the pumps.

All that aside, the main pump is driven directly by the relay, protected only by the 25A fuse under the hood by the battery.

The tank pump feed, however, passes through a second fuse, this time an 8A. The logic here is that a fault in the tank pump will blow the 8A and won't K.O. the 25A fuse; this means you can still boot around in your brick, laughing in the face of danger the whole way.

Hopefully the crude "diagram" below will help explain this.

So, if the main pump is working (you didn't say, but since this isn't another "car dead" posting I'll assume it's working), I would look at fuse #4 and the wiring from there to the tank pump.

Another tip: the same fuse that powers the tank pump also feeds the 02 sensor. Check the yellow w/red striped wire on the 02 sensor connector with the engine running. If it has +BAT the fuse is okay.

And based on other postings I've read here, it might be a good idea to keep the tank topped up. Otherwise the fuel will drain back and the main pump will probably have a harder time getting primed back up.
