    Awesome car dude!! 200 84

Beautiful car, John. Is that a factory paint color? Can't tell on this old monitor if it's dark blue or a light shade of black?? I'm jealous...you don't appear to have *one* crack in your driver's seat!! Is that vinyl or leather btw?

One thing you forgot though... the all-important shot of the instrument cluster, including the odometer. :-) How many miles on inertia?

factory dark blue, to be sure. ;-)

I'm pretty sure it's vinyl, but everyone that rides in it keeps trying

to convince me that it's leather.

ran out of film ;-) 84k right now, but don't worry I'm working on 100k.

        Re: Cool 200 84

Looks like leather to me dude. ;-)

Wow, this is really a rare find. Only 84K??? Lemme guess... previous owner was an old lady who drove it to bingo on Saturday night and Church on Sunday morning. Inertia looks like she just rolled off the showroom floor, or didja do that with photoshop? :-) For a 15 year old car, it's cherry. Wish I could find one like that here in CA. Very hard to find an older 240 with <150K. Even if you do find one with uncommonly low mileage, you've still got an older car, and certain areas (e.g. wiring harness, mounts, suspension) will need attention regardless. Just out of curiosity...how are your wiring harness and bushings holding up? If you've still got the original plastic tank Volvo radiator, you might think about replacing it with an all-metal one from iPd as a precaution. They get old and crack when you least expect it (ask me how I know about this sometime). The old b23's could take a lot of abuse, but the b230 isn't as forgiving if it overheats ($$$).

At 84K, that engine should still be very "tight." With regular oil changes, you should expect at least another 100K of trouble-free service. I've got a b230f in an '86 with 164K. Doesn't burn a drop of oil, just passed CA emissions test, and still gets 28mpg on the highway (4spd/OD tranny). I think it's gone through a waterpump or two, and a few timing belts (maintenance item), but no major issues so far. The valves didn't need adjustment until 150K, and even then they weren't very far out of spec. This might also be a good time to switch to synthetic if you so desire, before you start racking up the miles. The '86 is still running on dino juice (last change was with Castrol GTX "drive hard"), but it already had 120K on it when purchased in '98, so I didn't feel that great about making the switch.

Sure you already know all of this stuff, just trying to be helpful. :-) Good luck with her and keep us posted (please).

Just a comment on the radiator souce. RPR has them for $219.99 (vs. IPD's $246). Better yet, look for one on ebay being sold by RPR that starts at $159.99 (Item #496528056).

If my 240 were that nice, I'd submit a photo or two to IPD and expect to see it in the next catalog.

I'm sorry, I must not have introduced myself.

hello I am john, the man that would dip the plastic radiator in brass

before paying $246 for anything. ;-)

come to think of it... we have a silver recovery system at work..

maybe a silver radiator would be better, at least it would be

            worth $246. ;-)

            ooh, really? neat.

    John:

"Inertia" car looks to be in fine shape, certainly prettier than my '85 245. Love the color, too; mine's beige (ugh). How many miles on her? Now you need some turbo sway bars, alloy wheels, Bilsteins, etc, etc. :-)

How's that OD bottom cover holding up?

      > How's that OD bottom cover holding up?

well, that depends... it doesn't seem to be leaking, but

it looks funny all coated in gasket compound. ;-) (paranoid)

Re: Beige? What's wrong with beige? 200 85

Two of my bricks ('84 245DL and '86 244DL) are beige, though in differing shades. I love beige! It's soooo unobtrusive!

Also, unlike the metallics of that era, beige paint tends to stay ON the car, thereby reducing rust. My '85, in burgundy metallic, is a major bucket.

So you can give me your car.

        Re: Hey!!! 200 85

My '84 is metallic grey, and the paint is on the car just as well as it was the day it left Gotenburg. In fact, it still shines after you wax it, and last time it rained the water beaded up on the hood. :-)

          Re: Hey!!! 200 85

Okay, here's what I SHOULD have said:

From my experience in salt-laden Michigan, neglected finishes seem to hold up better with non-metallic paints than with metallic paints.

And this is largely true because (like early 80's underhood wiring) in the early 80's, manufacturers were experimenting with more environmentally friendly ways to make things like metallic paint and insulation. And like always, some experiments failed. Fords of the early 80's were notoriously bad - I had an '84 Ranger on which the paint came off in sheets.

Of COURSE there are metallic-painted cars of this era that still look good with the original paint - but look around and you'll find that there are more that look BAD.

MMM... Looks very nice. I've never seen a Volvo in that deep dark blue color before. It looks like a great color for a 240.

    Happy Volvoing!

Woooopps, I noticed in your last photo the Infamous broken plastic do-hicky to hold #1 ignition wire.

    Seriously, looks nice and clean.

want to hear something funny? I broke that the day I bought the car.

I was checking under the hood, and snap!

I whispered to myself, "fucking do-hicky".

      > Seriously, looks nice and clean.

thank you, I'm doing my best to keep it that way.

and besides the terrible stentch of the gasoline I spilled

in the back, I think I'm doing a pretty good job. ;-)

That's so funny (I'm still laughing about the "dirty Beck" comment, though).

I played with the plastic doo-hickey the first day I got my 1884 244Ti (all of four months ago). I tried to snap one of the ignition wires back into its clip, and the 16 year old plastic fell apart. Cheap doo-hickey.

        Nice, nice car.

BTW, regarding not switching to synthetic after 150K miles, and realizing each car is different, I switched over to full synthetics everywhere at 157K, and I am glad I did. It's been 2 degrees F every morning in November where I live, and my car starts easily and flawlessly, the transmission shifts when super cold without any notchiness or gridning. My Jeep's still running dino oil in the gearbox and diffs, and it is like chunky peanut butter unti it has been driving for half an hour. Gotta get that switched...

this one was on synth engine oil when I bought it, and I just

switched the trans. goop to synth as well. indeed, it is much better in the

          cold.

Re: and now, what you've all been waiting for: photos of a volvo! 200 1983

The car looks really nice, and luckily you have less than 100k miles. Keep up on everything and you will have a lot of miles left on the car. My 83' Turbo is in some need of work this weekend (water pump, front main seal, cam seal), but she still goes (quickly) at 193k miles. The metallic silver paint looks good (except for hood), but could use a repaint someday. I have other pictures at home, but this is the only one on the web.
