died,won't start 700 1989

I've heard these cars are prone to computer module failure...we have deermined(by changing components for known-working ones)that the problem is neither fuse nor relay nor fuel pump(has power). We have heard that the offending module can be tweaked to alleviate this problem by jumping a wire, etc. This is a non-turbo with the module with a ink sticker-I believe the part # ends in 715.Any assistance would be gratly appreciated!

Re: died,won't start 700 1989

Robb,

First check for any trouble codes using the DLC (data link connector) and let us know what it is. If you are not familiar with this procedure let us know and we'll give you the info.

I recently had the same misfortune on my '90 D240. The "Check Engine" light and the engine died. I had to unceremoniously bring it back home on a hook.

I had the following symptoms:

- MFI (multi-port fuel injection) DLC not functioning. LED on solid when wire plugged into #2.

- retrieved a 1-4-4 "Missing load signal from MFI" code from the ignition computer. (This is also commonly associated with a bad system/fuel pump relay, and Volvo issued a Service Bulletin on it.)

- fuel pump won't run. The pump should at least run for 3 seconds when the ignition is switched on. Take the cover off the relay. When the ignition is turned on, both relays (system and FP) should activate, and after 3 seconds one of the relays (the FP) should drop out. The FP relay should kick in again when you crank the engine. You can manually activate the fuel pump relay when the cover is off, but don't leave it on too long just in case the MFI computer is so screwed up it's holding the injectors (manifold and/or cold start) wide open. BTW - resolder all the connections if you haven't already done so. I had about 5 bad solder joints on mine. I was actually excited when I saw that, hoping that was my problem. But, alas...

- weak injector pulses. My tests showed the injectors were trying to fire but the signal was too weak. You should see +Bat at the injectors on the orange wire; the other wire is pulled to ground to activate the injector. In my case only a partial ground was provided by the MFI computer.

- ignition worked fine. Verified with timing light, spark happening when it should be.

- all timing belt pulley timing markings verified.

There is no "jumpering" of the module that will revive a dead unit. It's possible to jumper the fuel pump relay to rule out a dead pump, but that's about it.

Now the rest of the bad news. My Volvo dealer quoted me $2500CDN for a new computer, $1000CDN for a Volvo refurb unit. There were no used ones to be had anywhere - apparently they are 'popular' items (translation: lemons). One wrecker knew them so well he recognized the part number (Bosch 0 208 000 561) almost before I had finished my sentence.

Which brings me to this: check the obvious, and make sure it's the computer before you change it.

And have your VISA card handy.

Good luck!
