High tail brake light 200 93

Dear all,

I am driving 240 wagon with high brake tail light, right in the middle of the tailgate window.

The light does not work when I press the brake pedal. The other 2 brake ligths are fine. Simultaneously when I press the brake the "light falure" lamp on the dashboard goes on(orange) - indicating problem.

I checked the globe of the high brake tail light and it is fine.

Apparently there is an electrical problem from the point the high brake tail light branches from the other brake lights(the other 2 brake light are working). Could be a corroded, loose, damaged, etc connector somewhere.

Does anybody have any idea where I should start the trouble shooting from ?

Has anybody experienced something similar before ?

Thanks in advance, Stilian

Stilian: My 86 240DL wagon has had the same high brake light problem caused by the electric wiring being damaged where it travels throught the tailgate hinge(s). This is a common brakedown for this car. Why in the world didn't Volvo design this better or provide better wire protection is a big mystery to me. There are some Volvo repair truoble shooting web pages that give good detail on how to repair this tailgate wiring situation, If I can find the one found before I'll mail it to you. Good luck, Roger

I won't make any guarantees... but I bet that it is caused by bad wires that run through the tailgate hinge. That's usually the cause of electrical maladies in the tailgate.

The one you're looking for is on the left side hinge, if my memory serves me. I just did the right side on one of my 245s.

You don't need to actually replace the wiring harness, although you can do it if you want. I just extend the wires in the tailgate and pull some good wire through the hinge, then splice out the bad stuff under the headliner inside the car.
