Heater Core leak?? 200 87

I just bought this 87 245. It is winter up here in Canada, and when I set the defrost controls (and even when I don't) there is a slight smell of anti-freeze coming through the vents, and the forward side windows, as well as the windshield, fog up like crazy.

I have checked for loose hose clamps at the heat regulator valve, and on the hoses attached to the heater core. (one I could not reach)

I suspect that the Heater core has a pinhole leak, but I do not want to accept that as the only possibility. I understand the only thing more difficult thatn replacing the heater fan motor (easy with Don Foster's tips) is the heater core.

Does anyone have any other possibilities??

Failing all else, are there any tips that will make swapping the heater core easier.

thanks in advance

GOrdon Hull

Gordon -- This sounds like bad news. If the hose connections don't feel damp, I can't think of what else it could be besides the core. Do you have the time and a heated garage available? With all the parts in place beforehand, you could easily do this in a relaxed weekend. Rather than take shortcuts, if the core's starting to leak, I'd be suspicious of the other components -- fan motor, hoses, thermostat -- they should be at the end if their service lives and probably need to be replaced as well. Since everything will be apart, those replacements would be far easier.

For better or worse, you identified one of the quick pre-purchase checks of a 240 -- turn on the defroster with the windows closed and see if they fog and if you smell sweet fragrances.

I E-mailed you two pictures with assembly outline. (UK car, steering wheel on the other side)

I guess you could try to cut away the square bits that stick out on the assembly and hold the core in place. You should only have to cut one side away (the side that does not have the hosepipes) and draw the heater core out through the side (like a letter box). You will need to seal and fix the part you have cut out afterwards.

This should be a lot quicker and I can't see any problems with this method. It does not work for the fan, that is higher up and requires too much cutting

    Reg,
