Fuel Pump? 200 1983

When my car is low on gas, it takes a long time to start, and it will occasionally sputter going uphill. The external pump gurgles quite a bit, and i can hear it from the inside of the car at idle. after driving about an hour on the freeway, it continually stalled after i got off (it was at 1/2 tank) , but after sitting 2 hours, it was fine. when it is full on gas, it takes about1/2 to 1 second to start, and seems to run fine. Im wondering if its the in tank pump, the external the lines or what. what are some tests i can perform on the car to diagnose it? if it is either of the pumps, where can i get a cheap tested used one?

thanks alot,

James

/// Zee is correct. The 1/2 inch long hose that connects the intank pump to its' output line is probably rotted. The access is over the axle in the trunk or below the rear deck. There is probably a compression fitting in the return line that can be opened rather than cutting the line to pull the pump/gas gauge assembly. Look under the car just over the axle for that fitting.

Spray WD40 on the lock ring to free it and blow any trash away from the lock ring. Any wide blade will bridge the lock ring and allow you to turn it. I use a narrow short handle garden hoe.

James -- Zee hit this nail on the head. You're lucky, because this is an inexpensive component. Replace it soon, or don't let your tank get below 1/2 full, or you're going to be dealing with more expensive pump replacements.

Short hose on the in-tank fuel pump is broken. Replace it with a length of quality fuel hose.
