Brake Lights Just Aren't Right 200 1987

My question concerns which lights should come on when the brakes are applied on my '87 244 DL. I changed the circuit card on the drivers side tail light today, and when I was checking the lights, I noticed that the different lights on each side light up when the brake pedal is pressed. On the passengers side, the light closest to the license plate on the top row lights up. On the drivers side, the light furthest from the license plate on the bottom row lights up. I've checked the brake lights before, and never noticed this. Which lights are supposed to come on when the brakes are applied? Actually, I'm just happy that the lights work, plus my rear fog light now works which was part of the reason I changed the circuit card.

Thanks for any and all assistance.

on the '87, the brakes lights are the lower one closest to and farthest from the license plate. those are also the driving lights. The upper lights that work as fog lamps should not change because the brake is depressed.

The brake light on the passengers side is in the upper row, so maybe the bulbs are in the wrong place. I assumed the problem was with the drivers side since I just took it apart, but now I'll have to check the passengers side bulbs.

      Thanks.

It's not the bulbs at fault here, it sounds like you have just got the wires for the fog and brake lights going to the wrong places on the passenger side.

At least with the later 240 taillights, the one farthest from the license plate on the bottom is the one that is supposed to light up. I don't recall if the inside lower one lights up with the brake lights, or if it just stays lit as a taillight. THis is as I remember it, not having a car in front of me while I sit at the computer.

The upper/inner red light(s) are the rear fog lights, and in 1987, your car should still have one each, left and right. But they are wired together, so if you unplug the left hand one, the right side will not work either.

Confused yet? I just remember from having to screw around with the taillights a lot. Make sure the proper bulbs are in the right spots, then trace the wires.

Re: Brake Lights Just Aren't Right 200 1987

I have the rear fog light working on the drivers side (top row, closest to the license plate), but the corresponding light on the passengers side doesn't light up as a fog light, and I didn't think it was supposed to. It does, however, work as a brake light. On each side, there is one light that gets brighter as a brake light (the 21W bulbs), so I guess everything is OK since something works on each side.

      Thanks.
