AMM Failure due to battery install 200 84

Gang,

Kids drive an 84 244 DL. Installed new/rebuilt AMM a month ago and the car ran like a dream. Last week car needed a new battery. After install I had to remove battery to replace the tray since Sears no longer had the group 24 battery with hold down tabs. Car sat for one night and when I used the car the next morning the AMM had failed. Car runs rich and smokes like a cigar.

Is there a specific proceedure to disconnect the battery in order to protect the AMM? Or did I just run into a cosmic event with the AMM failing?

Unrelated is my guess. Those things fail often enough ithout battery failure. Watch out for a bad ECU though. Before investing in an AMM I would swap the neighbors ECU in and see. Also do your ECU into his. You can rule out the ECU maybe if one of you still has a good AMM. It is really hard to separate the two at first glance. If you do need one check ebay for a cheapy or go rebuilt for ~$175.
