Re: oil capacity 900 1992

Dear Sir, You probably already know the answer but I thought I would inter ject some of my wisdom-6 quarts, as soon as you put in that last quart you will get a mark on your dipstick. I just bought a 1993 960 and my big question was proper oil-weight,vicosity, natural verses synthetic, etc., etc. What do you think of your 960 at this point? Keep in touch, maybe we can swap mechanical problems-Good luck, Dick Berry

Re: oil capacity 900 1992

Hello Dick,

Thank for the input. I prefer to run synthetic 10W-30 summer, 5W-30 winter.

I live in Minnesota so the winters can and often do drop down into the minis temps for days at time. This 960 is my sixth Volvo and first in the 900 series. Had a 87 740 turbo loved it sold at 170,000. Have a 87 240 in garage with 140K+ and a damaged front end which is what force me into buying the 960. Remaining were all the 200 series.

So far the 960 has been ok. Little history. It's 1992 with only 29k on. The story goes that the car was original own by a older couple that snowbirded to FL. each winter and left the car in NY. Explain the low milage. But i also think this car was in the vintage of the porus block issue. For i have found that the block has been repair (welded)under the exhaust manufold accross 4 of the 6 cylinder. needless to say, a little upset when found. Done a compression check on cylinder and are pushing around 235psi on 1,2,3 #4 is around 215psi and 5&6 are 235psi. I have not put the question out there to see if this is a good range. Any input on this?

So right now im fighting a oil problem. Seem to be to much crankcase pressure. Blowing oil out the filler cap. found pcv clogged, cleaned it out

no help. So i disconnected the breather hose from pcv and run it this way seem to help, I don't have huge amount of oil leaking any more. I'm thinking that cylinder #4 is leaking (bad compression)causing the internal pressure in crankcase. This one (meaning 960)going to be a challenge the 960 model has a lot more electronic system them the 200 series(more to go wrong or not).

It's a 6 quart engine with the filter. Always use the dipstick as the final word.
