Water Pump Noise? 200 1989

When the water pump is getting ready to go, does it make a noise similar to squeaking belts, but louder?

Same question, except substitute the alternator.

All of a sudden, there is an incredible racket, but I can't tell if it's belts, water pump or alternator.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Have you checked belt tension. Slipping belt will squeal. If belt noise spray on belt dressing to see if noise immediatly goes away. If it does then belt is slipping or pulley out of alignment. Remove a belt to see if noise goes away and which one is at fault.

I did check the belt tension (I swear), and the alt belt is a tiny bit out of alignment but the bushings are new.

I sprayed the belts with water and the noise did decrease significantly. So I guess I'm looking at glazed belts?

Thanks for the guidance Mr. Haire, Don, and David!

When I've had water pump or alternator bearings fail, they tend to sound like they're pumping pebbles instead of water or electrons.

"...can't tell if it's belts, water pump or alternator..."

A mechanic's stethoscope (or a long screwdriver, used very carefully) works wonders in these situations. On the alternator, you can even distinguish front from back bearing.

If it's a squeal (and your alternator belt's tight) then Mr. Haire's suggestion should be first on your list.

Check the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) for separation of its concentric halves. If you run the car fora short time, and it is noisy, shut it down and feel the pulley to see if it is inordinately hot.
