No overdrive when warm 200 83

I've got a 1983 240DL with the four speed manual transmission with automatic overdirve. If the outside temp is warm and the car has been running awhile, 30 miles at highway speeds, it won't drop into overdirve easily. The light comes on and you can tell it's trying to but I generally have to speed up to 65 or so to get it to drop into gear. Once in gear if I'm driving about 55 it has a hard time staying in gear. At one point the car was loaded down and had been driven 1000 miles or so and just stopped dropping onto overdrive. Once it cooled down it was fine. Is this a solenoid problem or do I need to replace the overdrive part of the transmission? Thanks for any help.

Re: No overdrive when warm 200 83

You only need to replace the actating piston seals. Time factor about 3 to 4 hours, cost about $40.

See the link to the 700 900 FAQ and scroll down to the transmission area. Look at the changing OD seals portion to see if you want to tackle it yourself.

Then contact me for more info and your own copy and prices.

My 81 does the same. Can you do just this repair without removing the transmission from the car?

Yes, but you will have to remove the OD unit from the transmission. There are great instructions in the 700/900 FAQ, or Duane can send them to you. Six 11 mm nuts hold the OD unit to the transmission. Stall the car out in reverse before you start taking the OD unit off, and the unit will slide off the splined shaft much easier. Once out, you will install new o-rings on the actuating pistons. While you are at it you will want to install new o-rings in the rest of the OD.
