wheel deal? 200 83

Hello,

I have a '83 242 DL with two year old Pirelli all season radials. They are mounted on factory steel wheels with chrome rings and hupcaps.

A fellow I met recently sold his '97 850 sedan (his wife didn't like it- she wanted an Acura!) but he still has 4 195/60/15 Toyo winter tires mounted on new steel rims. The tires were purchased in '98 and were on his car for 3 months and have less than 5,000 km. wear. He even has 4 wheelcovers. He's asking $300.00 Canadian for all 4 tires, wheels and covers.

Will these fit my 242 DL? sound like a deal? The 4 snows sound good as we drive to the ski hills every weekend in the winter. It also saves my factory silver steel wheels and chrome rings.

Thanks.

Mike Holden

Re: wheel deal? 200 83

Tire swapping wisdom:

1. ALWAYS check bolt pattern for match

2. With 99.9999% certainty, FWD and RWD tires have different off set

3. ALWAYS check overall tire/ rim heights. If the overall height changes, so does the speedometer reading. (ie: if you get taller rims, you better get lower profile tires)

Re: wheel deal? 700 87

Mike, I felt the same urge a few weeks ago. Bought some wheels and tires on eBay, unseen. From a nice guy. But learned *then* that the newer (mid-90s +? 850... S/V/this/that) wheels are DEEPER than the older (2xx, 7xx...) wheels. I measured. (Better late than never.) The older style had (from memory!) ca. 25 mm offset from CL of wheel, while the newer ones are (again from memory!) ca. 45 mm. offset. ABout 20 mm diff., or 3/4" WHich would work OK on the rear of my 745 (projecting inwards about an additional 1", what with the wider wheel/tire, and not projecting outward more at all), but would strike the strut on the front. No maybe. Wouldn't even mount there.

I hope that's clear. Live and learn! (Just shamefully full of trite wisdom today... Bye!)

Gregg

The offset is definitely different, but I think the bolt pattern is the same. There's a want ad in the classifieds section for a set of steel wheels for a '98 S70, so if you decided to buy the wheels/tires from the '97 850, you could keep the tires and sell the wheels.

Good luck.

The 850 wheels will not fit.

Different bolt pattern and offset.

But ofer him 1/2 and take the tyres and get some salvage yard steelies to mount 'em on.
