late shift on auto trans 700 '89

760 glt wagon, 3rd to 4th shift on auto trans late. Shifts immediately when I take my foot off the gas. Downshifts fine. Am I correct in assuming the adjustment needed is with the vacuum modulator?

I haven't been under the car yet to see exactly which tranny it is.

Thanks for the help this week on the non-defrosting outside mirror and the desire to put brighter bulbs in the sr714 stereo.

    From what I understand, if your gear selector reads "D-3-2-1" you have a ZF. If "D-2-1" you have AW-70/71.

    Most likely you have the AW-71. There is no vacuum modulator. It has a cable that runs to the throttle spool. Chances are the cable housing has worked out of it's crimp at the throttle spool. Sometimes you can carefully work it back in and lightly crimp the metal attachment to secure it. Worst case is replac the cable, wich requires dropping the pan.
