Seeking assistance in either repairing my driver's side seat or purchasing a replacement. Has anyone had a similar problem? Car has 171,000 miles. Thanks.

    Re: 240DL Driver's Seat 200 1987

I had the same issue with my 85 245, I didn't read all the replies to your message so forgive me if I repeat what others may have said.

First thing you need to know is that the passenger seat and drivers seat can be switched. You have to make a minor modification (bend it) to the mounting tab, also this should not be a permanent soltion because the adjustment knob for the backrest will not be accessible. But it makes it to where you can do the seat yourself if you wish and still drive the car, or drop the seat off with someone to do.

As for the do it your self issue, I opted for to have a shop do the seats, they did a pretty good job and charged me 250.00 per seat. The passenger seat came out great better than new, the drivers seat was much worse off and I suspect that the foam used was not the same density as the original, still the seat is very comfortable and firm, its just that the shape is not exactly what I wanted. In short my advise would be to use a professional shop preferablly one that has done some european cars before, ask them. I say this because if they are accustomed to redoing seats for Oldsmobiles and Pickups, which have marshmallow seats, your seats may end up being too soft.

    Good Luck,

    Don

    Re: 240DL Driver's Seat 200 1987

Is it the cushion that has gone bad or the wire supports below and inside of the cushions that have gone bad. I had the driver side seat on my 82 245 go bad at about 250000 mi. what happened was that the wires that are part of the lumbar support broke. also the wire mesh that supported the seat cushion broke. went to a junk yard and got the correct pieces and rebuilt the seat. the lumbar support wires are a pain to replace. took all day.

Without taking it apart, I think it is the wire support in the seat and the lumbar support wires in the back. The knob on the side is broken and a wire is also coming through the back of the seat. I have heard that possibly finding a newer seat may be the way to go if I can find one. Thanks.

        Re: 240DL Driver's Seat 200 1987

the bottom is easy to do. just unsnap the seat cushion and remove. most of the time, the cross-wires or springs have slipped off, not broken. I reset the cross-wires and springs (then wired them up to prevent future movement. The back is more time consuming. The lumbar support stretches two U-shapped wires (about 2 inches wide and 8 inches long. one up and the other down). the U goes over the lumbar knob bracket (in the seat), the ends are attached to springs. Usually the wires break, but sometimes the plastic shaft breaks. To replace. go to a junk yard and get the wires from a seat (this will also allow you to see how the rear seat goes over the frame and how things are put together). then replace the wires on your seat. you will need to completely remove the seat from the car (unbolt from the frame - 4 bolts, easy to do). I have some spare wires from when I last did it.

On my '84 GL, it is the corner springs on the seat cushion that have worked loose. trouble is, I can't tell where on the wire arrangement under the foam these attatch.

It looks to me like no matter where I strectch to and hook onto the grid, the coil spring will pull apart thazt corner of the grid.

Where does the coil spring hook on?

Thanks for the info. Even though I live in Pittsburgh, I purchased my Volvo in Easton back in 1987. Small world. I hope to find one in a junk yard somewhere to perform the required surgery.

Keep in mind that the last two springs—one on each side—are a tad longer than the other springs.

the coil springs just hook over the rod on either side of the seat (right and left). what I did was to put a small bend in each end of the rod to hold the spring in place. I also ran diagional wires (good old bailing wire) to hold the ends of the springs in place.

              On a side note:

I am also having problems with my '89 240's Driver's side seat. In addition to your problem, (I tend to find springs and wires falling out from under both seats.) I have a problem which seems widespread but rarely commented upon. That is, that the rear support bar, or the bar that is the main support running up the right side of the back support is bent backwards. The car came this way when I bought it used. It appears, when looking from behind that the right side of the seat is bending back . I can pull it forward, but the slightest bodyweight pushes it back.

Has anyone seen this or know of how to fix?

                Re: 240DL Driver's Seat 200 1989

                Hello,

I got the same problem in my '89 244 GLT. The seats were losing the springs and also the wires were fallen out. The rear support bar also was in a bad condition, so that I decided to buy a new Recaro Seat for my car (easy to install) because my Volvo retailer told me, that a '89 244 Volvo seat could not be sold anymore (just the different pieces). Must say, that my new seat is very OK.

                  Hello,

Yesterday I picked up my faithful '83 242 DL (347,000 km.)from a custom automotive upholstry shop in Toronto. The cost to rebuild and reupholster the driver seat, including welding the frame and installing high density foam in the seat and back; plus reupholstering the passenger and back seats, totalled $530.00 Canadian (about $350.U.S.).

The new upholstery is almost indentical to the original and she looks great.

The IPD do-it-yourself seatcovers alone for the front and back cost $386.00 U.S.

Some jobs are worth hiring a pro.
