performance 900 1992

I own a 2.0S non-turbo (110bhp) estate which I would like to increase the performance of. (I don't want to sell it and buy a turbo). I'm not looking for a huge increase in performance I'm more interested in improving the low-down torque of the engine. As the engine has only done 66k miles I don't want to dismantle the engine. Can anyone therefore recommend any intake or exhaust mods - I've heard about something called a turbo-zet which is something akin to an electric turbocharger - does anyone have any direct experience of fitting this to a car.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Michael Low.

Re: performance 900 1992

Don't waste your $$$ on the Turbo-zet. It is a total joke -- the volume of air that you need to boost to get any more HP cannot be produced by the silly turbo-zet.

As for more HP and or Torque -- well, start with the basics, improve airflow - just don't put on a 3" exhaust - that will kill your toruqe.

IPD sells an adjustable cam pulley that will probably solve your problem.

Re: performance 900 1992

Guy,

I've wondered something about those adjustable cam pulleys: If the car has the crank position pick-up on the flywheel, I can see where advancing the cam wouldn't screw up the ignition timing - it would always fire in relation to the crank position, regardless of cam position (to a point). But if the car has a hall effect sensor on the cam, the only knowledge the ignition has of the crank (or piston) position is what it gathers from the cam position, which is now false because we advanced the cam in relation to the crank.

Thoughts??

Re: performance 900 1992

Interesting - Where was the car originally sold? What engine management system does it utilize? I'm wondering if you could replace the 2.0 with a B230 (2.3 liter). In the end it could be a less troublesome and more reliable conversion. I understand in some countries though, this could lead to a significant increase in road tax......if the authorities found out, that is....

Increasing the low-end torque on a small engine like that may be quite a bit more challenging than increasing the top end. Is it an auto transmission or an "oldtimer"?

Another possible option: A revised computer chip to alter the power characteristics. I can't remember the name(s) of the compan(y)(ies) selling them.
