monster size leak 200 82

Hi there,

My 242 decided to start leaking coolant.

at first it appeared to be coming from the water pump.

now I filled it up and ran the car with a light underneath, and it appears to be leaking out the whole side of the engine.

it drips in a line along the bottom of the engine.. it was too cold last night for me to see where, but is this a sign of bad times?

I lost a gallon in one day on Monday.

refilled and it's not leaking quite so fast, but still...

what is the basic check procedure?

I checked the oil for coolant and there isn't any.

also, the coolant on the ground has no oil in it.. it's nice and green.

Re: monster size leak 200 82

There are only a couple of places it could in all probability be leaking:

-water pump and water pump seal

-heater tubes along the side of the engine

-heater hoses or water valve behind the engine

    -thermostat housing or hoses

-head gasket or freeze plug (not likely)

Sometimes the leak is tough to trace because it doesn't leak fast enough to show a stream, but instead runs along engine components and shows up elsewhere. This is a good reason to clean the engine compartment every so often in order to be able to see leaks of coolant, oil etc.

The easiest solution is to take it to an indy shop (Ames Ultimate, Ron's Auto, Cartech, etc.) and have them pressurize the system and find the leak. Or just fill it with coolant, let the engine warm up and look hard with a strong lamp.

After I came to my senses, I think that yes, most likely this is a leak in hoses or the heater system.

Tonight I'm going to crawl in there with a flashlight and see if I can get myself sprayed in the face with coolant.

I noticed that yes, my heater does work, but not as effectively.

The water pump is wet around the seals, but it isn't the item that's causing the whole passenger's side of the car to leak.

Fun fun :) It had to do this right as it got cold out :)

Actually, every time I take this car out of 'retirement' more stuff brakes :)

Mental lesson: Decide whether to keep using the car all the time, or get rid of it :)

I miss my 91. The girlfriend has is, since her car is FUBAR.

My car has also been leaking coolant, but slowly. I replaced the water pump seals a few weeks ago, and i can't tell beacuse of the timing cover but it might be leaking a tad in there. I should have replaced the pump at the same time, so maybe it's whats leaking. As far as i can tell none of the hoses are leaking, but maybe the radiator has a small crack or something.

I'm still searching, i will take a good look this weekend.

        Zack
