Overdrive question 200 1983

Hi all!

My car is a 3 speed with OVERDRIVE. However, the OD does not work. Will driving on the freeway at 65-75mph in 3rd gear hurt the tranny or the engine? I'm aware that I may reduce my economy without OD, but will anything else be hurt?

Exactly what is OD? Is it the 4th gear? BTW, my tach doesn't work either. Will going at 70mph in 3rd gear without OD rev it to redline? I had to drive it on the freeway for 45miles to get home.

Thanks in advance! Oh, I just got my 1983 240GL wagon yesterday and am so excited! I love Volvos and have been wanting to get a 240 wagon as a project/secondary car. Finally got one! It needs new shocks. How much will it cost to replace all four?

Re: Overdrive question (and shocks) 200 1983

Hey!! Congrats on your 245. My wife drives an '84 GL with about 170k on it...fabulous car in spite of its age. Was supposed to be mine...now i'm working on an '87 DL for myself. Anyway..about the shocks...I was able to get all four at JCWhitney for under $100. The set on her car is about 3-years old and working great. I'm sure they're not Bilsteins, but I'm as cheap as they come. The car rides and handles great, and they come with a lifetime warranty, I think.

Duckling:

If you'll scroll down the board to yesterday (Wednesday) at 2:43 PM, you'll see a post from "Blue Volvo Guy" regarding his overdrive problems. The responses to his question contain information that may help you solve your OD problems. And no, running 70 mph on the freeway won't take you to redline in 3rd gear; probably no more than 3500 rpm or so, as opposed to about 2500 rpm with OD engaged. But your mileage will suffer. So, fix your overdrive.

Also WRT your tach, it takes its signal from the +1 terminal of the coil through either a white and red wire (big factory tach) or black wire (2" accessory tach). Make sure the connector is tight, clean and free of corrosion. If your tach really is broken, contact me off list; I have some spares.

Re: Overdrive question 200 1983

I presume you are talking about the auto trans. This is a 3 speed auto

with OD like you said. So, driving in third isn't going to hurt the trans

but the engine will rev much higher and your mileage will be much lower.

Since its a new car to you I recommend you perform a full service to the

car which includes all fluids and filters to start things off with a known

maintenence point.

The front shocks are strut inserts and if you don't do your own the labor it will cost you. The rear are standard telescoping shocks. You can get a

replacement set of shocks like the Boge Turbo Gas model for around $200

for all four.

Re: Overdrive question 200 1983

Since no one mentioned it yet, your overdrive problem may just be a relay problem -- very common. I don't know where it is on the 240. Maybe someone else could chime in here?
