Lost key to ignition 200 1993

'
Lost my ignition key.
Cannot find a locksmith to make one.
I have a spare steering column with key but do not want to swap out.
May not have a choice.
Anyone have a suggestion?

The only suggestion I have tested is one you would have mentioned trying if you'd thought of it: Bring your title to a Volvo dealer.

Granted policy may have changed over the years, but you asked for a suggestion. Can't hurt to give your local guy a call.

      Contacted dealership.
They wanted 100+ bucks up front, and WOULD NOT GUARANTEE IT WOULD WORK. Found someone on ebay who made one for $85. Got key fast, but it was not symmetrical, would only work one way. Better than nothing. Way better. I will contact them and see what they can do for me.
Was a great relief to start the car again.

Saw your thread on tbricks. I can understand not guaranteeing results for their efforts, having no control of the car's service history. But would have hoped contact with a local potential new car customer would have allowed for a less profit-heavy application of goodwill. Could be, compared to the cost of replacing a modern fob/key $100 is a pittance. In any event, those kids deserve some free exposure in our forums, no?

I can certainly see why someone making a key remotely using the key code wouldn't guarantee success. Volvo dealers used a die key punch for the 140/240, 700/900 keys based on the key code. The original key code (and radio code) are registered with the VIN. There were two different blanks, a main key for all locks and a valet key for just the doors and ignition, both have the same cut teeth, just different grooves so you can grind a new key using either one. The dies in the dealer key punch kits were known to wear, so you often had to heavily burnish the keys to work properly. Both when grinding or punching a two-sided key, when the key is flipped over it needs to be carefully mounted to align properly. For the last keys I had punched at a Volvo dealer many years ago using the key code, even after burnishing they went through at least five blanks until one of them worked smoothly without having to wiggle and jiggle it. A neighbourhood locksmith could have made a better copy on an aftermarket blank than the worn out dealer punch.

I would think an old worn lock would tend to accept a slightly miscut key more than a new lock. I wish I could have found a local to hand cut me a key, but I had no key at all. I burnished mine on a wire wheel ( grinder ) Hopefully, Govnuks parts, who made my key, will make me another that is symmetrical, which I can duplicate locally.
As to flipping a key over in the machine, I made keys in the old days with a simple machine. Those days are gone. Now, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware, etc. have the self service idiot machines, requiring little or no knowlege or training. Corporate does not give a damn if the key works or not. They see a bad key as "guaranteeing you to return to the store", where you hopefully will buy a $3.00 Gatorade, or a cheap Chinease trinket. Customer service and technical expertise are Nostalgic concepts, becoming extinct by corporate and stockholder greed.

Society is collapsing but my 401K is doing great!
