945 axle thrust washer replacement 900

My 1991 945 has a lot of "slop" in the back axle - off the ground there is a lot of back and forth movement at each wheel.
I have replaced the diff sun and planet thrust washers on MG and other British cars to reduce this wear - is this easy and straightforward to do on a Volvo 940 axle? Has anyone done this job?
Thanks
Ian F

Dear Owen F.,

Hope you're well and stay so!! I cannot recall a post reporting the problem You describe. The FAQs cover many subjects. But there's nothing as to work inside a rear end (final drive).

These units - mainly made by Dana Corporation - seem very robust, at least if the lube oil is changed about once a decade.

See if you can find Volvo Service Manual TP31685/1. This deals with the rear axle. For a .pdf version, see: https://www.ebid.net/us/for-sale/volvo-700-940-960-rear-axle-service-manual-1991-tp31685-1-pdf-217613843.htm?srsltid=AfmBOoqr2cYHVk5JefzOFkiYxW6RknBKee-Wvgg6xwz9RHUWQ4nltgnF

I wish I could be of more help.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Many thanks spook, I will take a look. I am just trying to avoid changing the whole axle!

Is this site still functioning? I can only log on every so often, mostly seems unavailable.

OM Dawg, RWD works today like normal. Keep reloadin' and no problem.

So, slap as in end float at the axle half shafts? Of at the flange the drive shaft connects to?

How many Kms? Kept the fluid up and no leaks? Repack the rear wheel bearings with new NGLI 2 grease?

Solid 'live' rear axle.

Sorry for your difficulties. Not a fan of axle work, or transfer case rebuild on an 1980s Ford 4x4, cause the unbright owner wants to engage 4L and smoke out the tires on dry pavement.

Hopes for a 2000s Jeep Cherokee with 4.2 liter, I-6 and manual gear box not beaten up and / or modded to be beaten up. Grocery getter in purple-state Wyoming snow.

Happy Eggnog Holidayze!!!!
