no return spring on glove box retainer 200

Our 244 GL glove box knob closes and opens as it should but as far as I can remember when I was a child it you turned it to open the glove box then the knob would have come back to its original position in order to lock again when you close.
there are 99% possibilities I've broken it when I was a child playing with it but I don't remember :p because if you turn it to open, then you have to torun it back to make the glovebox close, otherwise the retainer...will not retain the glovebox.

Maybe there is some spring inside missing or that is broken?

See half way down in the following article for what the circular return spring looks like. Perhaps one of the legs is broken or if you're really lucky just dislodged. A used lock and switching the keyed tumbler is what you may be faced with. There's basically just a roll pin you need to remove. There were two very similar styles of glove box locks used in the 240s.
