Has anyone found a good solution to getting rid of the "old car smell" that these can wind up with? Both my 1990 cars had a bit of the smell, but this one that has been sitting for a looooong time smells enough that it's bothering me. It kind of stinks when I get in it and I think sometimes I can smell it on me after I get out of the car.
So... where is it coming from? What is the fix? I've been spraying Ozium into the car once in a while for months or weeks and it just isn't resolving. I have a bad feeling that it's coming from inside the AC system or somewhere unreachable.
It isn't a specific bad smell like skunk or cigarettes or anything, it just smells like an old car that has sat for a long time. I've only driven it like 20 miles in the last week or so, but the smell is bothering me. I can dump baking soda in it, I can take the carpets out and wash them, I can ... spray something into the vents? but I don't know if the "old funk" is something I can do anything about.
Anyone have suggestions?
Cheers!
Will

Also be aware that stubborn mold can develop in the A/C evaporator core box. It's a large plastic, vertical box area under the dash on the right side of the console air distribution box, between it and the glovebox area.
Dust and debris can collect in the bottom of the box. Condensation from the evaporator core drips down to the bottom of the box. If the debris stays wet then mold growth can develop that will be difficult to kill. It's not uncommon for this drain to become completely blocked and for water to start collecting in the box until it eventually trickles out into the passenger compartment floor area (sometimes confused for a leaking heater core).
There is a little black plastic drain spout (maybe about the size of the two end joints of your little finger) on the front lower edge of the evaporator core box. The end of that drain sticks out through the firewall to let the condensate drip to the ground. That's the drain from where you see water dripping onto the ground after the A/C has been running.
Periodically (like once per year) you should poke out this drain to make sure it's not blocked with debris.
In 700s and 900s, look on the firewall on the right (passenger side) down behind the A/C receiver/dryer, about 1"-2" below where the firewall starts to bend in, and you'll find the end of the drain sticking out. In turbos there's a heat shield on the firewall that covers the drain and will need to be removed for access. Sometimes there's a short vinyl tube attached to the drain (remove it for access to the end of the spout).
o Stick a small slot screwdriver up through the spout and wiggle it around to loosen debris. Don't be shocked if all of a sudden water starts coming out (you may get a good onr or two cups if the bottom of the evaporator core box is full to the point of almost running over into the carpeted footwell area).
o Use a vacuum hose to try suctioning out any loose debris. A piece of tubing taped to the end of a vacuum hose can be useful for this. Repeat suctioning as you go here.
o Poke a couple of inches of wire up through the drain and wiggle it around to loosen the surrounding dirt in the bottom of the box.
o Blow a bit of compressed air up into the spout to blow debris away from the drain (with the debris temporarily out of the way at least it can now drain for the next few months or years).
o If you want to try doing a more thorough job, go under the passenger side of the dash, remove the glove box and remove the blower fan from the main air intake duct of the air distribution system. You can then feed a piece of tubing taped to a vacuum hose along the bottom of the intake duct and over into the bottom of the evaporator core box to suction out debris. You can even get your hand part way in to help. Don't be surprised if you find needles and leaves. At the same time you'll be able to spray deodorizer directly into the lower part of the air distribution box.

I have a CPAP machine and I also have a SOCLEAN
It connects to the CPAP to clean it with ozone. It can work automatically each day to clean my CPAP for 10 minutes - or
It can be set manually to run. There are settings than can make it run almost any time.
When it runs, I can sense the ozone in the room almost immediately so it is set to run at noon each day - It then sits for 3 hours with a yellow light, then turns green to tell you that the ozone is gone.
A LOT of people have CPAP machines. (In the morning, I can recognize them by the strap marks on their faces)
It is supposed to kill 99% of bacteria.
If you can find one (just ask) you could run it in your car.

My worry with this is that it would make the already brittle plastic much worse. The ozone might do a great job. I could also see about trying to really air it out for several days.
The smell reminds me a little of something sweet (not coolant) like decomposing foam of some sort.

A musty odor could be, "evaporator stink," from the AC. But it is treatable. There are several YouTube videos on the matter and they all involve spraying various aerosol anti-bacterial products like Lysol or even some made especially for this purpose into the fresh air intake on the outside of the car with the AC on.
But what I have found to work is to drop the under dash fabric, if in place, then run the AC with the recirculate button on and spray a couple of quick bursts of Ozium, which apparently you already have, under the dash on each side of the center console. Of course you'll want to exit the car quickly because it's not good to breath that stuff right out of the can. If that doesn't work you could try a stronger product.
My method only works, though, if the flap that controls the air source still works. When they fail, as they often do, it's fresh air only. But you can still spray the aerosol from the outside.

I don't know anything about ozone generators, but I know some detailers offer that service. From what I have read in some cases they give surprising results.
