Header pipe leak

1991 740 Regina

I anticipated the exhaust leak on this 740 was going to be eliminated by replacing the “donut” between the header pipe and converter. Obviously the flair on the end of the header pipe has deteriorated and the fix would be to replace the header pipe. I do not have a header pipe to swap so I am seeking a temporary solution.

Any suggestions on a temporary fix to reduce the noise and give the oxygen sensor a realistic sample to work with in doing its job?

I second what Art said. I used it for weeks on my 240’s header pipe. It’s basically furnace cement. Good stuff!

This is what I did to temporarily fix my 2002 S40 front pipe -- That pipe incorporates a woven flexible section and includes the "cat". The woven section broke completely 3/4 of the way back. Between the solid part of the pipe before the woven section and the end of the woven section was about 15". I forced the woven section back in place and wrapped the works with a piece of tin I had lying around and clamped both ends with hose clamps. It leaked a bit but is 90 percent quieter. When I next visit my son who has access to a torch and lift I'll be able to replace the whole system which I've already purchased. You should have little difficulty doing the same. - Dave

You may be as surprised as I was to find this holds up as long as it does. Certainly enough to make it back home 1000 miles and a week to get the right pipe replacement.

      Thank you, Art.

I hope to secure a replacement today. I have found several online that claim they can provide it but I want to verify the availability. The JB Weld wrap could well be the quick fix I need.

Just when I think I am too old to be using jack stands and rolling around on concrete one of the Volvos tests my assumption.

        "...rolling around on concrete..."

No kidding. Got a reminder the padding isn't what it used to be and the hip bone closer to the surface.

Had to do this head pipe twice last month. The rusted out part was at the weld for the midpoint bracket on a 240. Felt lucky I had it though concerned because 15 years ago I'd labeled it #3 from this collection of misfits.

They all had various problems, but I kept this #3 nonetheless. Its problem turned out to be typical - warped flange, as the next day it was noisy again, and the soot pattern on the new gasket led me to where the high spots were.

Second time with it, I pulled the manifold so I could do a better job cleaning that up.

Guess I got lucky with the belt sander.
It's been quiet for a month now, and the bruise on the hip only a memory.

Three engineers and three accountants were traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three accountants each bought tickets and watched as the three engineers bought only one ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asked an accountant.

"Watch and you'll see", answered an engineer.

They all boarded the train. The accountants took their respective seats, but the three engineers all crammed into a rest room and closed the door behind them. Shortly after the train departed, the conductor came around collecting tickets. He knocked on the restroom door and said, "Ticket, please".

The door opened just a crack and a single arm emerged with a ticket in hand.

The conductor took it and moved on.

The accountants saw this and agreed it was a quite clever idea. So, after the conference, the accountants decide to copy the engineers on the return trip and save some money (being clever with money, and all that). When they got to the station, they bought a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers didn't buy a ticket at all.

"How are you going to ride without a ticket"? said one perplexed accountant.

"Watch and you'll see", answered an engineer.

When they boarded the train, the three accountants crammed into a restroom and the three engineers crammed into another one nearby. The train departed. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers left his restroom and walked over to the restroom where the accountants were hiding. He knocked on the door and said, "Ticket, please."

Art, Take it from my 77 year old bones---cardboard---refrigerator boxes work best. My driveway is dirt so a creeper is out of the question. Cardboard is easy to slide around on, drips don't wind up on the ground and when it gets grungy - throw it away -- start over. -- Dave
