Nissens Heater Core Foam--740 700 1989

Hi did a search didn't find anything. Removed the heater core on 89 740 thanks to guide posted on this site.

Got the Nissens brand replacement that is pretty light and plasticky and rattles (?). It's probably a competition lightweight part. Now I can tell people I put special lightweight parts on it. Its a "CSL."

Anyway it comes with a foam strip, the old one did not have a foam strip when I removed it. Anyone know if I can just throw this out or where do I put it?

IPD's video on the 850 core says you MUST put the strip in there to make the air go through the core but the heater box design is different for an 850 and if I put it in the same place as the video it doesn't seal anything. Thanks if someone can help me.

    Nissens Heater Core Foam--740 700 1989

No other heater core brands, including the original Volvo, come with or use a foam collar. Doesn't look like that foam strip is needed or should be used in the 700/900s. if I had to make a wild guess, Nissens simply made a mistake because this heater core is also used in the 90 series , which used a 700/900 air distribution box in the early series, while the later 90 series used the FWD air box, much like the 850 which does use that foam collar. Double check the profile of the new one against the original just in case it is needed to bulk up one of the dimensions or could be used for padding somewhere to prevent rattling or even use it on the door shutter if the original foam is damaged.
(Edit I originally said this heater core was used in the FWDs, but that part number has a different last digit)

      Nissens Heater Core Foam--740 700 1989

Thanks a lot, will check to see if I can use the foam in places suggested although I'm dubious about it being next to hot radiator but if it supposedly goes on the core for the 850 I guess it is ok.

Seems the body of the core on the outlet side of the Nissens is not as thick as the nice metal one I took out so the strap is not fitting the same. My solution is to bend the strap so it bows toward the body of the core so that it holds better but still troubleshooting if this will rattle or not maybe good place to use the foam dunno.

Also seems like a good idea to hook up the core and warm the car to make sure its ok before putting everything back again. Thanks again.

Thanks a lot, will check to see if I can use the foam in places suggested although I'm dubious about it being heat resistant but if it supposedly goes on the core for the 850 I guess it is.
