164 and 240 / 260 series sunroof seal - NOT ScanTech! 140-160

I rebuilt the sunroof mechanism with new (NOS) cables, and I replaced ALL of the seals. My first mistake was to use ScanTech replacement seals. What they sell is not original equipment. It is instead a rubber gasket with flocking material glued on to make it ‘fuzzy’. The seals are a little too thick, and the flocking comes off easily, especially during the gluing process. After it’s glued, if a corner lets go, the whole gasket will peel away, leaving just the flocking covering stuck to the frame.

After a lot of Internet searching, I found the original seal material. It is sold for old Porche autos with sunroofs. This is the real deal: true fuzzy material (no rubber) with a metal insert for rigidity. Also, the back of the seal is perfectly flat for glueing. (Scantech has the bulb at the top, so there is no flat side.) They also still sell the rubber gasket that sits behind the sunroof rear gasket. This piece is unavailable for Volvo. The only downside is the Porsche sunroof is smaller, and therefore the gaskets are not quite long enough. I had to buy two sets of Porsche seals to fix one Volvo 164 sunroof.

Why do none of the Volvo parts sites offer genuine OEM-quality sunroof seals? Clearly, the material is available if there’s a factory making the seals for Porsche. Don’t waste your time with the ScanTech knock-offs, you’ll end up with a mess, and it takes a lot of time to scrape and re-prep for the proper seals.

The following came from Pelican Parts, but there are several websites offering these parts:

Sunroof Seal (Rubber Strip)
Part #: 901-564-905-05-M127 Price Quantity Subtotal
$15.00 1 $15.00

Sunroof Seal (Velvet Strip) Long Section(Porsche)(m)
Part #: 911-564-191-00-INT Price Quantity Subtotal
$45.50 1 $45.50

Sunroof Seal (Velvet Strip) Short Section(Porsche)(m)
Part #: 911-564-193-00-INT Price Quantity Subtotal
$27.50 1 $27.50

Remember you need two of each!

ScanTech? If it came in a package with ScanTech markings then it is really old stock since ScanTech ceased operation at least 15 years ago. ScanTech appears to be replaced by a company called MVolvo or something like that. Do you mean Skandix?

Skandix sells a reproduction rear seal with their label on it. They also sell the fender strips / piping / whatever you want to call it. That is available in a version from a non original supplier and from the original supplier to Volvo (which may not be the same as coming in a Volvo labeled package).

I meant Scandix. FCP (Groton) Euro sells the sunroof seal kit you don’t want. However, looking on IPD and FCP sites today, I see they’re offering a “Genuine Volvo” seal. The FCP site shows only one seal (presumably the front). IPD now has the “Genuine Volvo” front and rear seal. The Scandix isn’t showing up on the IPD site today. Neither site has the rubber seal that goes directly behind the rear seal. I’m not sure what the rubber seal does. Maybe it’s a cushion against rattles when closed. Maybe it deflects wind-blown water to the sides when the sunroof is open. Maybe both.

I used 3M black “super” weatherstrip adhesive. I worked sections of 8-12” at a time. I used masking tape around the outside edge of the sunroof opening to make a clean edge. Otherwise, the glue makes a mess and is difficult to remove (even with the 3M remover). Glue the front seal slightly lower than flush with the top of the opening. Otherwise, it will protrude above the surface when the sunroof is closed.

Big thanks for posting this. The genuine Volvo sunroof seals for the 140/240 series are still available and presumably of good quality. Excellent to know that the aftermarket ones from Skandix are inferior and that decent aftermarket alternatives can be found such as those you note and at a very affordable price. I sent a note to the fine folks at FCPEuro so that they're aware of your experience with the Skandix ones that they list as an alternative.

      Hio Dave, BB, and Ajb164,

The last two times I got an OEM form the blue box folks, they were garbage.

Surface prep and maybe some super Sikaflex?

Someone here on the board of brick mention using nylon strap, folded, and so does not sear the painted edge of the moon roof.

If I can find that post here. Maybe in the morrow on our happy Sat-your-day.

Maybe make a Volvo 164 and 240 SolidWorks ot NX CAD model and make someone build it new.

      Beer-thirty.

    Hi Ajb164,

Thanks for the nice post about the sunroof seal.

What adhesive did you use for the job.

Did the Porsche seals indicate the OEM manufacturer?
I wonder why they don't offer Volvo seals?
    Maybe some corporate lawyer knows?

Perhaps these are the same seals used in later model Volvo: 700/900/... ?

    Happy motoring, Bill
