ABS struts Vs non-ABS struts? 900

My 1991 945 is a non-ABS car. I am looking for replacement front suspension struts - the part with the stub axle on it, NOT the inserts. I have found a pair of used ABS struts (but not seen them yet).
Does anyone know if these ABS struts will be the same as my non-ABS struts?
Obviously the hubs are different, one having the sensor ring for the ABS, but I don't know if that means the stub axle is different (longer perhaps?).
Thanks for any guidance

Ian F

Dear OwenF,

Hope you're well and stay so! I can't recall having seen a non-ABS strut housing.

That said, the hub's format is not relevant, as the strut housing and hub are separate parts, i.e., the strut housing and the hub have separate part numbers. That said, I think you're correct to posit that the stub axle's length could be different.

I have a set of used strut housings for ABS-equipped vehicles. I'll measure the stub axle's length and report my findings.

For the sake of clarity, the part you seek is not a "strut", which term refers to the front suspension item with an hydraulic cylinder, that periodically must be replaced. The part you seek is the "strut housing". It has no moving parts and - absent collison damage, neglect of a failing hub, or severe corrosion - rarely needs to be replaed.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks Spook.

It seems the terminology over here in Europe (the home of Volvo) differs from in the USA.

I can guarantee that the "suspension strut" is definitely the part with the stub axle. The shock absorber/damper which fits into this is called the "strut insert"

I did try to post an image from a top German parts supplier (Skandix) illustrating this, but could not manage to post an image.

Best regards

Ian F
