14' Michelin tires no more?

Morning everyone!

Need new tires for the 240 but it looks like michelin does not seem to make 14" tires anymore. I am sure it is all business but, I have never had any luck past a year with anyone else's tires, other than yokohama for trucks.

Am I crazy? Am I missing something?

Tempted to run 16" wheels and I know 195 to 205 isn't that big of a jump, but I also know it will hurt fuel economy and wet traction. Suggestions?

Thanks!
Andrew

    14' Michelin tires no more?

I too have been a long time believer in Michelin. I’ve had very good luck using the General Altimax RT43 on two of my cars. They are made by Continental. Comparable to the Michelin Defender but cheaper. I have over 40k on a set of four now and they will probably do at least 70k. You’ll have to check if they have a size for 240’s.

A good economical tire for 240’s is the Kumho Solus 11’s. No Michelin but a good tire for the money.

      14' Michelin tires no more?

Talked to Michelin directly and was told:
I am sorry, Michelin no longer makes tire for size 195/75R14 or 185/75r14. Because this is an antique or classic tire fitment, we recommend that you contact our exclusive Michelin Vintage tire distributor, at 866-591-3418 or visit their website at cokertire.com for availability and/or pricing.

      A quick search on cokertire.com

and holy cow! This is what my model A friends have been complaining about! The high performance tires for my Porsche were cheaper!

        14' or 15' or 16' 700/900 steelies?

I have made in US Cooper tires on the 14" steelies. They do alright. Yet the Cooper tire site does not have 14" 185 / 70R or those with Virgos won't find any that fites.

To the vendors that may have new old stock if not too owld.

15" and 16" steelies from 700/900 for use on 240 before the change in RWD offset to the FWD offset in 1997 or so? Dunno the year. Larger diameter wheels 'can' improve handling, ride quality, and fuel economy.

A search through the Walmart tire fitment page by wheel / tire size or by make/model/year can help.

Walmart can't spin balance a tire with a gol durnit.

Also, try Amazon tire and wheel search.

Have read yet dunno quality of made in China tires. Yet China is making genuine effort to massively improve quality and safety across all their industries for export. Very happy for that.

Ever try running snow tires year round?

        Back to doc.

The Virgo wheels are 15". I think the original tires size for those fitted to the 240t cars is 195/60-R15. There is a variety of tires in that size available.

          Howdy Kit!

Gotta ask - Did you run snow tires year round? I actually did for not quite a year on my 240….:)

Good suggestion on moving up to a larger RWD wheel. Far more tire choices! Think early 700/900 alloys will work as well as steel. As long as their offset is correct. Think so… 🤔

Andrew - The change in offset to the FWD offset occurred in 95. Doublechecked- I was curious. Gives you many more tire options. Ride (definitely) and handling should improve.

Where did you double check your info about offsets? Just to clarify, the offset didn't change in the '95 900s as I've got the same wheels as the prior 940s. That was the last model year for 940s in the North American Market. If anything, it might have changed in the 960s in 1996 when they were re-badged as the early series of the S/V90s in North America, but someone would need to verify that. The later S/V90 series would use the FWD offset. I'm not sure about the RWD 940s that continued outside North America until 1997, but I highly suspect they also kept the old offset as I don't think they touched the chassis, suspension or brakes as it wouldn't be worth it for such limited production.

To the OP, many of the Asian brand named tires that are still available in the 14" 185 and 195 width should be reliable and provide quite adequate performance. Euro car owners are among the last to start recommending them to each other as we're simply not familiar with them. Check reviews for ones you might want to look into further, also talk to your local tire store as they're the ones stuck processing warranty claims.

Dave -still with 940's, prev 740/240/140/120 You'd think I'd have learned by now

The offset change occurred in 1995 not 1996. Here you go. Read the wheel interchangeability section. I made no mention of 940’s. You did. I simply stated the year the offset change occurred -1995…

I do agree that later (1996+) non-North American market 940’s probably retained the same offset as the earlier cars. The larger offset wheels on 850’s and later 960’s/S90/V90’s (IRS) probably won’t even fit on the 940’s with their solid axle rear suspension.
