ATF in a Dana 30 diff? 200 1993

I just checked the diff in my newly-acquired 1993 244 stocker. It's been on the lift for 3 weeks, hung up on parts.

The diff is full as can be, and it sure looks like ATF, very liquid after a 20 minute test drive of the new shocks and brakes. The oil in there was not terribly clean either. Guess I'll change it out for 80w90 later today.

Is anyone running ATF in their diff? I know it's a thing with manual trans lately. Maybe I should invest in a 5gal pail of Mercon V.

    Hi,

Hypoid gears do not use anything but EXTREME PRESSURE lubricants that I know of.
Hypoid gears work in a right angles circles of motions from inside outward, so it’s more of a sliding motion.

MAYBE the synthetics are different in color as I’m ignorant to what’s in that game but the EP part I would consider crucial.

You had better check out your owners manual on this one!

    Phil
