Poly accessory bushings 900

I have had recent failures of the poly accessory bushings which IPD sells. The bushings were installed for mounting the alternator. In the first case, the ridge on the rear bushing failed and the alternator moved rearward. In the second case the front bushing disintegrated, and the alternator dropped down. I have replaced the bushing with rubber bushings.

    I found the alternator poly bushings had disintegrated on one of our 940t cars. Luckily I didn't discard the old rubber ones when I replaced them years ago. I have replacements on my shopping list.

      91 740 , After 20 years the polys on the alternator are still fine and couple years ago I renewed the poly bushings on the suspension. The old one seemed ok though deformed.

    Interesting, John. How many years do you figure they were good for? My only experience with poly bushings is the IPD poly bushing blocks that come with their front sway bars. They give you a poly compatible grease to use. After a number of years it dries out and you'll start getting front end squeaks over speed bumps. I imagine that's a hint that wear is likely taking place. That's long been on my do list to re-grease and your post now reminds me to put it to the top. You can't just use any old grease, it's supposed to be a silicone based grease (typically PTFE additives), not a lithium based grease (typically with moly additives). As much as there's not a lot of movement in the accessory mounting bushings, for those who do use poly bushings it might extend their life to initially apply lubricant as a surface protectant. After your post I'm definitely going to keep staying with the rubber bushings as I always have. I'm uncertain if there are significant differences in the aftermarket rubber compounds. At least for the alternator they're quite easy to replace so the difference between a 6 and 9 year lifespan isn't a big deal.

      The poly bushings for the sway bar end link lasted about 15 yrs. I am seeing the poly degrading on the PS pump, the lip is falling apart and they are only about 5 yrs old. All from IPD on my 240's. Very disappointing as I thought they would out last the car.

        Mine are crossing the 15 year mark. Guess I'd better put my end link poly bushings on the replace sooner than later list.

          I have not had trouble with the poly end link bushings. I think the engine vibration is fatal to the poly accessory bushings. They crumble. I'll be at IPD tomorrow to get more rubber bushings and show them the failed bushings.

    Same thing happened to me years ago. Maybe the rubber aren't as "good", but they don't turn to crumbly bits and cause big running problems. imagine if they were on some large suspension joint
