Rusted Brake Dust Shields 900 1994

My 940s brake dust shields here in Minnesota are deteriorating, mainly on the bottom, from road chemicals. Does anyone have a replacement idea of the bottom section? What needs to be removed to replace the dust shields with new and are new front and rear dust shields still available?
I have thought of possibly cutting sections out of old dust shields that have good sections and pop riveting them across the rusted out parts?
Any help would be appreciated. Our old 940s are still running strong despite the road chemicals used.

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well and stay so! Front protecting plates are available from Volvo. The part is #9140670 (superseded numbers: 1329770; 1359915). At a US-based dealer, the cost is about $75.00 per unit.

Hub removal is required. I'd then saturate the bolts securing the plate with PB Blaster or a similar penetrating oil. It will take some time (days) for the oil to work its way through micro-channels in the corrosion.

It would be best to replace the hubs' nuts (Volvo #1387624), which I think are one-use items. The nut should be available from a Volvo dealer for about $8. The torque spec is 74 pound feet and 45° Angle-tighten (Volvo pocket data booklet - Cars (700, 850, 900) p. 120.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks for the updates! Are the dust shields necessary? Any problems just letting them deteriorate?

In addition to their shielding function, I think they also tidy the wire from the ABS wheel sensor. At least up front.

One of mine is starting to go (driver side, I think). Since I don't drive much >3k/year) I'm tempted to take a look at aftermarket. Something tells me that they will be flimsier than the ones on there, though. If they look sturdy, I'll use them.

I replaced rusted out dust shields in my 740 with after market, maybe Scantech?
They came through unpainted, but That was OK. I just brushed on some cold zinc
first and they were fine. (Poor man's hot dipped galvanize)

Here's an option for $37 shipped. Vaico (unpainted?)

Good luck, Bill

Hi,

Trust me, if they weren’t warranted by the manufacturer they would not go to the expense to put them on there!

They really should be called Deflector shields.
The terminology of “Dust shields“ is a misnomer in this case.

Have you ever seen idiot car drivers going through water in the news flashes.
You see waves of spraying debris outwards onto other cars or people on sidewalks.
The shields may seem only as thick as an umbrella but you should be glad have them on the car every time you step on the pedal.

It can takes a couple turns of a caliper to shed a sheet of water out of the way before gripping.
The grip can depend on groove designs or material compositions of how quickly they work.
From the way people tailgate each other the shields are relied upon more than you would think.

You can only imagine that what goes on underneath the vehicle to be just as equal off the other side of the same wheels even without any flooding per say.

It gets to be a regular food fight like you would see in the movie “Animal House” under there.
There’s no sorority picnic under there even dry conditions of sand and pebbles.
Without belly pans under an engine that area above would look devastated like a pie on a face.

Oh, inspect those rubber Dust Bellows regularly too! Look for splits or tears.
They are those things on the steering rods that push the rudders back and forth. (:-)

Phil

I replaced the front shields on a 940t. The hubs need to be removed.

The rears on the same car were repaired/reinforced using fiberglas cloth and resin.

Hi,

It's probably the same as the 740 that requires the rotor off to swap the
dust shields. This is a good thing to swap when you install new rotors and pads.
Forget the pop rivets.
If the new dust shields come through unpainted,
paint them with cold zinc before installing.

Bill
