I ordered a replacement antenna mast from rock auto for my 740 , I think it's the same? It was cheap and very easy to install, I didn't have to mess with the motor unit at all. you just basically trick it into extending more than once and it disengages, then you stick in the new one. I was surprised how easy that was.

    Hi,

I have never put in a new one as I have been able to repair those I have found in the junkyards.

Luckily the lower bottom ends were unmolested by someone cutting the harness or ripping off the controller relay box.
It only costs a little more than $10 to replace the complete mast that has the nylon rack that engages the gear below.
The mast seem to be plentiful and will be listed to fit Volvos.
If you have a old one now or have a source for one it’s an easy rebuild.
You just have to get all the left over original rack out of any small lost pieces.

I have no idea who made them for Volvo but they are not that complicated internally and a hole in the body and a way to anchor the bottom isn’t either.
What kills them is water intrusion if a drain hose doesn’t drain as that removes lubrication.
Mostly it’s the nylon rack ages and it cannot take the sudden reversals from the radio commands.

The ignition switch is what does it with the radio left on.
Going from position 1&2 gives it enough time to start moving the antenna and then we turn the key to start, it immediately tries to reverse the mast.
By then, we release the starting mode 3 position and back it goes up again.
The radio antenna circuit needs to be on something that does not get interrupted.
Shame on the radio factories for not to pausing the output signaling a few seconds.
I even have one radio that runs the antenna up in CD mode. If it’s on, it’s up!

I put in a time delay relay made from the courtesy dome light system.
It turns on right away but like the courtesy light does but delays the turn power to turn off.
When you turn the ignition off the antenna hesitation can be as much as five to seven seconds.
There is a heater, in the relay can that has to cool down to open the contacts.

I get them out of junkyards too.
I guess a person could repurpose everything off these cars because they were quite basic by nature over todays black boxes.
I’m sure the black boxes are better for using less current. A transistor, resistor and a capacitor for pennies. Adjustable resistance and dial it!
Like other things they are probably ridiculously overpriced for retailers to offer them to car enthusiasts or a garage tinkering hobbyist.
An aftermarket item maybe, but where & $.

Anyways, maybe this one way conversation, I’m having, will give the post you made a bump and make it a longer thread of interest.
Someone knows out there as more postings numbers attract eyeballs better.
    (:)

    Phil
