In search of..........retired mechanic that may have a few tools for sale? 444-544

Hello,

Part # SVO2370

Some of you may have seen my earlier post about my struggles with the Pitman Arm Removal. The struggle is real my friends.

I finally found a puller that works..........for the most part. Needless to say, it isn't perfect as the steel strength cannot hold up to Swedish Steel. I've broken 4 bolts that hold the arms in position, bent the arms multiple times, applied close to 2 bottles of butane torches to heat that bastard up to nearly red hot. I am out of ideas.

So I had an idea to see if anyone, here or outside of the US, may know of a retired Volvo mechanic that may have this tool in their toolbox collecting dust.

Thanks

If you have not removed the steering arm yet I will send you the name and part number of the puller I used. Slips right on and using anti seize on the puller threads and a good impact it came right off. Mark the steering arm and steering box shaft so they can be aligned when you reassemble.

    Best
    Ray J.

I found a couple of pullers that I am going to try out later today. Both of them appear to be much better in their construction. I am playing around with the idea I might need to remove the shock absorber and then drop the lower control arm to gain the access I need.
As for the realignment, I learned my lesson from the first time and will center the steering wheel first. Attach the tie rods to the Pitman Arm, then slide it onto the steering shaft. I'm normally a pretty decent shade tree mechanic, but this one has me a bit frustrated. Thanks for your offer to help out.

The arm and shaft should have factory witness marks stamped on them. Amazon ones do. Clean and inspect before you take the arm off.

    Hi,

Have you checked out the loaner tools at the big retail autoparts chains?
    Autozone, Advance, etc?

Use MAPP gas to heat up husky stuff easier.

    Bill

Yes, I've rented the tool at AutoZone. Didn't really work too well. It had more to do with how it fit between the Pitman Arm and steering box then how it all line up to pull without screwing up the shaft. Good suggesting, but been there, done that.

      Hello,

We use a slightly modified Snap-On pitman arm puller, part number CJ115.

The drive bolt that comes with the puller is longer than needed and it makes it difficult to position the puller when removing the pitman arm with the steering box still mounted on the car, so we had our machinist face the end of a Gr 8 bolt with the correct thread to make it flat on the end and then he drilled a hole in the end of the bolt to accept the removable tip that comes with the CJ115.

This is the tool that has been suggested by a few people. The Interwebs show the OTC8150, and OTC8149 models. I am going to buy both, then send back the unused puller. The drive bolt has been an issue with other pullers. Naturally, it dang near lines up with the lower A arm in the way. This has to be the MOST stubborn thing I've done on this car !

Getting bored yet of hearing about the Pitman Arm fiasco?
Well, I'm here to tell you that the OTC8149 worked ! I had to do just a wee bit of grinding on it for clearance. You wanna talk about a substantial tool? That thing must weigh close to 4 LBS ! Long story short.
Had to remove the lower control arm to properly line it up. I used a rope threaded through the spring to hold the the suspension up. NO worries or surprises that way. I heated things up once again and got the Pitman nice and cozy. Now it's time to apply some muscle. I first tried twisting the bolt with a regular socket wrench with no luck. Once I got a 3' breaker bar in on the action, I could feel some movement, but still not enough. Then I decided to just go for it, and pulled on that S.O.B. with everything I had.............about 5 seconds later you could hear the POP as it finally released from the steering shaft! Woo Hoo ! Thank all y'all for the help !
