1994 Volvo 940 Automatic Wagon Won't Start, No Dimming Lights 900

I thought it was just a loose alternator belt, but now after charging the car and fixing the belt, the starter doesn't do anything at all, or draw any power. I measured the voltage of the small wire going to the starter and got 11.3V in Key Position II and 11.8V in KPIII. I thought that was weird, I thought the voltage would only be present on KPIII. I have the wiring diagram for this model, and there's a wire bypassing the neutral safety switch which I find bizarre, I feel like I am reading it wrong. Attached is a wiring diagram photo

You may have a failed solenoid on the starter if you turn the key to start the engine.

I forget whether the headlight shut off when starting as it does on 1986+ or 1989+ 240. I guess not on 1994 US market 940.

Here some wiring diagrams. Mitchell service wiring diagrams:

However, the voltages you list are low. A charged, connected battery should show around 12.5-13.5 DC volts with key out.

The starter may have failed. So to a new Bosch or rebuilt by Bosch Bosch starter! Removing the starter motor can be a bother so replace with new or Bosch rebuilt.

The fault could be in the ignition switch connected to the ignition lock. Use the lightest keychain possible. Do not add a bunch of stuff to weigh a key chain down. You can test continuity through the ignition switch but to get into the 900 series dash is a pain sort of.

Also, when using the HREF or img src=, use the width= to 900 pixels in width.

I guess BrickPix remains on the fritz. The images are still there and you can link to them. The image do not display in the BrickPix pages here.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you, that was definitely the case. I unfortunately was short on time and got a cheap starter but I was thankfully able to get it in and out easily. I think I’ll replace with a Bosch in the future, but now there’sa big misfire on cylinder #3 and is stumping me
