Torque specs for the rear brake backing plate to the rear end 444-544

Hi-If you have at your fingertips or memory torque specs for the rear brakes
backing plate to axle. I just changed lubed and changed the bearings.
Also, the differential housing cover. I am going to replace the gasket.

Thanks,
Regards from San Clemente, California

The rear backing plate bolts are 3/8" UNF and we use Grade 8 nuts and bolts and you can torque them to 45 lb/ft.

Are you aware you may have to make adjustments to get a reasonable axle end play after replacing the outer axle bearings?

Its been a while since I had my 122's rear axle apart but i seem to recall a procedure to set up the mesh of the crown and pinion involved changing shims behind the backing plates or shims near the pinion bearings.

If you take it apart put he shims behind the backing plates back the same. Otherwise you might need to check the gear mesh with blueing and get the mesh correct. i think there is a felt seal you can change in front of the backing plate. I remember seeing a drum where a misplaced brake drum key caused the surface on the drum where the felt seal rides to become distorted.

I made a tool to pull the drums and some I had were really stuck on the tapered portion. i remember heating and cranking on my puller and beating on the puller to shock it, When it finally came, that drum flew away from the car.

i think if you at least loosely install the drum you can then install the key with it already on the taper, and then you wont get that key situated too far back and cause the issue with the drum cracking near where that felt ring rides.

The shims behind the brake backing plate are strictly for setting the end play for both axle bearings and won't change the ring and pinion settings.

The shims are typically found only behind the right backing plate, but there is nothing wrong with putting shims behind the left backing plate or behind both backing plates.

To install the locating key, install the drum on the axle while lining up the 2 keyways. Push the drum on until it fits tightly. You want the drum to fight tight but not so tight as to need the puller to remove it in case you need to reposition the drum if the keyways don't line up. Then install the key with the tapered side in 1st with the taper facing down at the axle. You should be able to get the tip started in the drum keyway and then tap the key almost all the way in with a punch and hammer. You can leave a little hanging out of the drum as the washer will push the key the rest of the way in when you tighten the axle nut.

my memories might be a bit fogged but I'd check in your manual where it describes how to set up the crown and pinion mesh. maybe you need to also check the end play of the axle shafts. those crown and pinion mesh setup procedures might mention the shims behind the backing plates.

I renewed the crown and pinion in my 122 and replaced all the bearings involved I got the bearings locally from a bearing retailer.
