Anyone go to the IPD event last weekend? My wife and I had a great trip on our 84 240 wagon to check out the IPD garage sale and Volvo meet in Portland. It was a good opportunity to meet other 240 owners with their cars. Saw a few 240's for sale. IPD made an effort to make it entertaining and worth people's time with a raffle, parts auction, car show, bbq, etc. Swap meet was interesting, lots of Volvo old timers clearing out their garage bins. Event started at 9am Saturday until 3pm. Lots of newer Volvos as well as older ones like 444's and 1800's. Our 240's are already antiques! Might go again next year it will be their 40th anniversary. We drove up the 5 from Los Angeles. 240's have become so rare we never saw another 240 the entire trip except the ones at the show.

You sure do know how to put a stretch into lots of things.
I have seen you over the years too.
I think I started in 2008 or so? I retired in 2005.
I peeked into your profile of postings and you go a stretch in between them. It may not be totally accurate as some posts show up as 1969 when there was no BRICKBOARD.
You have built a nice short working autobiography in there.
Your skills and help to others show a progressional of love for your wagon.
Plus finding an equal in human of companionship too boot. Cannot beat that.

Yep, we all are looking for endurance and some limit ourselves to one or several Volvos. In my case six has been enough.
Now again, more than one Women or Man can become an expensive maintenance issue.
The manuals for these and accessories are always being upgraded. (:—)??(—:)

Traveling that stretch of I-5 to go to a vendors celebration sale? Wow, what an enthusiasts past time.
I admit the 240s are quite rare to some extent but not seeing another one on that stretch of car lot is not surprising. Maybe that event would have to be more popular.
They only have a small parking lot or have they moved away from the LeatherMan knife factory and showroom?

When considering the dynamics of that much road being shadowed, by just two or more passing 240s, going in either direction is very random indeed.
Sure there are lots of entrances, exits and cross overs to peer out and onto.
It is still like passing through completely blacked out warehouses and all you have is a pen light with only one battery. Now, add in some traffic jams, it’s really limited.
Our cars are probably not going to be where you are. Their Up ahead or even behind you and are all moving randomly.
It’s Like winning a large lottery prize, well not quite that bad, for the Volvos yet. Classics have passed to vintage sometime ago and borderline antiques are around fifty aren’t they?
Numbers made versus the years since with a popularity balance can make a big difference.

I have seen young men picking up theses cars and tricking them out!

Thanks for the reply Phil. Yes you are right, at the IPD event I saw lots of younger men with tricked out 240’s. Its a different love but a love nevertheless. I was observing they seem to be the more intellectual types. IPD’s parking lot is still small so they arranged to use someone else’s large parking lot across the street given it was a Saturday and offices are closed. It was a beautiful sunny day in Portland. There were a few nice unmolested 240’s for sale at reasonable prices. It used to be that parents buy a 240 for their son or daughter going to college but it seems the choice is now a Prius or Civic. Some folks even flew in and drove a rental car to the event. At the show there were P1800’s and 120/220’s from 60’s most were in excellent shape. None of them owned by younger people. I believe this is where the 240 is headed. There were also many newer FWD Volvos but I think as they get older they will not follow the 240 path.

I’m still driving the same wagon with 404k miles. I have already realized that like Irv Gordon, I will not live long enough to wear out my Volvo. We used to bark about how difficult it is to replace a blower motor but after seeing what it takes to replace a blower motor on modern cars, I realized how remarkably easy it is on a 240!
