Lifespan of Ignition Power Stage 900 1994

I will be going on a long trip and trying to bulletproof my 940. My ignition power stage dates back to 2011. I reapplied the paste three years ago.

What is the useful lifespan of this part, as well as the paste? Should either or both be replaced for maximum reliability?

Thanks.

I agree with the other poster about the longevity being very high.

It overheats and shuts off only once the paste has become hardened past the point of conducting heat. Fresh paste should run you 5-10 dollars for about 20 power-stages worth and each application should last you about 5-20 years.

On my PCs and their video cards, which I use to do medical research for a "distributed supercomputer" project from Stanford University called Folding@home, paste lasts me 1-3 years, but those see almost constant temperatures of 70C (158F). The way the paste "dries up" is that the silicone oil evaporates.

One of our 944t cars has 306K miles. I had a problem with the power stage four or five years ago. It would shut down when it had been driving for about 20 minutes, and then restart when it had cooled down.

I removed the power stage, cleaned off the old paste and then applied new paste. It has been fine since although I found a 940t at the pick and pull. I got the power stage off of that car and reapplied paste to it. I ran it for a few weeks to test it and put the old one back on. The replacement travels with an assortment of parts in the trunk in case I should need it.

Given your situation I would probably clean and reapply new paste.

    Enjoy your trip.
