Fuel Line To Use For Pulse Dampner Replacement? 900

I wrote a comment on my earlier post.
I am wondering about the pressure between the in-tank pre-pump outlet and the under-car main pump fuel line inlet and what fuel line to use to replace the Pulse Dampner. The replacement fuel line needs to slip over the green line from the pre-pump outlet on one end and the under-car main pump inlet on the other end, both having a diameter of .475" (inches).

    This is the hose that the 240 uses to connect the in-tank pump to the main pump.

    $3.74/ foot.

    It is not the 30R9 fuel injection hose that Spook is recommending, but rather 30R7, regular fuel hose. The 240 in-tank pump operates at a lower pressure than the line from the main pump to the injectors, so this is suitable.

    I have no experience with 900 cars, but if your in-tank pump is putting out 43 lbs. this won't work for you.

      Dear maplebones,

      Hope you're well and stay so. The Volvo Pocket data booklet Cars (700, 850, 900), 1991-1996, does not list any pressure parameter for Bosch fuel pumps.

      The only fuel pressure datum involves the system regulator, which is 300kPa ( = 43.5 pounds / square inch). I'd guess that the in-tank, pre-pump operates at a lower pressure.

      As, however, fuel delivery is mission critical - and a fuel hose failure creates fire risk - I thought it best to suggest use of a hose that is rated for full system pressure.

      Auto supply stores sell fuel hose by the foot or in pre-cut sections of varying length.

      In general, I'm reluctant to try to economize on hoses, whether for fuel or coolant or power steering.

        Hey Spook,

        I take your point that if in doubt, it's always better to err on the side of caution.

        In this case, if the feed line to the main pump is only under a few pounds pressure and the original equipment was 30R7, then replacing it with the same would not be economising.

        My local Napa dealer carries 1/2 inch ID 30R7, rated at 35 psi, but not 30R9, and neither can they source it.

        It's made, as you pointed out, but where to buy it is another question. The Continental you referenced is available only in a 50 ft reel, according to the chart.

    Dear jd620.

    Hope you're well and stay so. I'd use a fuel hose rated SAE 30R. This hose is engineered to take pressures up to 100 pounds / square inch (p.s.i.). The fuel system on a Volvo 940 operates at about 43.5 p.s.i. See: https://www.continental-engineparts.com/na/en-US/Commercial/Hoses/Truck-Hoses/Products/Product-Range/Fuel-Hose/Products/Fuel-Injection-Hose-SAE-30R9 .

    In a 1/2" internal diameter, it will fit easily over the factory-original steel fuel pipes. I'd double clamp each hose end using stainless steel, screw-operated clamps.
