WHAT TO DO WITH 1993 940 WAGON??? 900 1993

Hi dear Brickboard members!

I have a 1993 940 blue wagon that I no longer really use (but LOVE) because my son brought back my 1992 wagon with only a little over 118,000 miles.

The car runs but does need some work, like a muffler and a tune-up, and the clear coat is nearly off on the hood and has some fading on the roof. There are other things I have lived with over the years, and I've had this one for about 10 years.

It has 323,000 or so miles on it. It would likely cost several hundred dollars to fix, but then again I don't need two cars. I don't want to just junk the car, and I'm wondering if you know any options how I could sell this as a parts vehicle or to someone who would want to do the necessary work?

I need to make a decision soon, as Pennsylvania inspection will be due by the end of May, and I'd like to only have to insure one car.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks,

Susan

A running 1993 945 is not a parts car! A 'tune up' is nothing more than new spark plugs and maybe an air filter.

If the inside is very clean and the driver's seat isn't trashed, check KBB.com and see what a private party price is in very good condition.

A reasonable buyer will assume that the car will need $1,000 after purchase to make it reliable - brakes, suspension, new fluids... If the brakes and suspension are reasonably new, you get a better price!

Do not advertise the car and let them know you are a female, you will get some really bad offers.

See the post just below yours.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Hi there! My sentiments exactly about not being a parts car, as the car drives really nicely. I've driven it across the country three times and have always had it maintained. It surely has more power than the 240. Cosmetically, it's another story. The driver's seat isn't in good shape. Go figure! I hear you about possibly receiving bad offers, yet I really do know this car well. Hoping to find the car a good home where it's loved and valued. Love the 940s!

Since you are in PA....try offering it for sale in Maryland...

As it's 29 years old, in MD it can be registered as an Historic Vehicle---cheaper bi-yearly reg costs, no requirement for inspections. There are usage requirements---can't be used for daily commuting, etc, but you may attract a buyer, since you say it is driveable.

    Craigs List?

Thank you, CeeBee! Didn't realize that Maryland had a different approach around older cars. I'm going to keep a list of the ideas shared here, for sure!

        I'm near Westminster.

a couple of weeks ago a fellow asked me about my 240 wagon. He and wife and kids were going into the Giant Food store as I was loading up the groceries.
He was looking for a wagon. So there are buyers out there.

When I bought all my Volvos, I found them in the Washington Post classifieds...but the days of Classified Ads and Local papers are long gone.
Markets closest to you---Frederick, Baltimore, Towson, Bel Air....MD

Thanks! Volvos are conversation starters, aren't they? It's a great car (or it least it will be after the work is done to it, but it does have the hood and roof clear coat issues and the driver seat isn't in the best condition.

How about approaching a tech school to see if they want the students to refurbish it and then raffle it off or away it to a student as a prize?

      Hi James,

      I like your idea too!

I would suggest her looking into finding a local Volvo club affiliate in her state and get them involved.
They take them and fix them up.
Some give them away to people in need and in some cases keep in touch with the cars well being, so it will always have a Volvo lovers home!

      Phil

Hi! That is an interesting idea and will keep it as an option. The beauty of older cars like this is being able to open the hood and actually see the engine! Thank you!
