Dead fuel pump & questions 200

So I searched around and didn't really find the answers I was looking for..

My 88 245 has been sitting for a little over two years. I've gone through most procedures for a not starting situation. And most of the ignition bits have been replaced with new. And I'm definitely having fueling issues.

I bypassed the pump relay via jumping 4&6 fuses. And not a peep from my pumps. I supplied voltage directly to the main pump. The pump is pulling 9 amps ( read with my clamp on ammeter).

I purchased this car in 2006 and both pumps very well may be original.

My questions: can the in-tank pump fail and the main pump keep the car running?

Do these pumps fail in this manner? I'd expect to hear a little noise when the pump is pulling 9amps..

Regarding replacement pumps: Is Bosch still a proper replacement for the main?
Is any hookie pookie in-tank pump acceptable?

Thank you for any help, the good folks at Brickboard!

    Hi,

Did you tap on the main pump when it was energized ? I've had a couple come to life after sitting.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. I've had 240's sit for considerably longer than 2 years that started and had no varnish issues.

Peter. Thank you for the response!
Yes! Great recommendation. Taping a tad bit on the pump was my go-to.

      But she's dead Jim.

Yes, the in-tankpump can fail without many symptoms. Most likely you'll just hear the main pump start to become louder (buzzing) when the fuel level in the tank gets below 1/2 to 1/3.

A clamp amp meter is a very useful tool. 9 A is certainly way too much (Haynes say 6.5 A), to me that sounds like it's stuck. I don't know if this is a typical failure mode.
The in-tank pump should draw about 1.5 A, you can get a clamp meter around its wiring if you lift the floor.
What happened on my previous 245 was that the pump inside the tank was OK, but drawing no current. It turned out there was a break in the wiring right where it enters the tank.

I actually went for a Bosch when I replaced my main pump several years ago. Aftermarket replacements are cheaper but could be quite noisy. The Bosch is just audible enough to here it pressurize the system for a second or so at ignition switch on.

Also check out Art's thoughts on the in-tank pump here if you're not already aware of it. He reckons Airtex is a decent replacement for the original.

Whoops, replied to you instead of the OP...

My guess is your main pump is locked up with varnish. I worry that you'll replace the pumps, filters, screens, and then find the injectors are clogged by that old fuel or rust from the tank. I expect a look into the tank when you pull the sender will tell all. Sorry.

Thanks Art. Not that that issue wasn't laying awake at night somewhere in some part of my brain.
But I'd rather of you'd not to have mentioned it. :)

But since you did, do you have one of your gentlemanly scholar webticals to refer to for rectification? :)

        Thank you, Art.

Sorry, I haven't any experience restoring a long-sitting car. Yet. I would read up on pdunn's experiences. I'd post a link, but I no longer know how to bring up a member's posts or threads beyond those in the past month on this forum.

Webticle. Have to look that one up.

Thank you so much Grey245 for taking the time to answer! All great info! I'm reading over Art's webtical now.

Although I don't have my Bentley infront of me (& although I only glanced over the fuel pump bits) I could of swore it stated 8 or 9 amps? 9a over 6.5a is a tad bit yikes.
