Warm start problem with 95 Volvo 940 Wagon, non turbo 900 1995

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing a bit of problem to start the 1995 940 Volvo with warm engine. Initially while cold, the engine fires up fine however, after driving for a while and turning the engine off, it would have difficulty to start up again. While cranking the engine to start, it hesitates by making pupping sound. The engine finally starts after a few tries.

Sharing your thoughts and experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Habib

I've had pretty much those same warm start symptoms twice with our ‘95 NA wagon, first time was the fuel pump relay, second time a worn distributor cap. Once things seemingly had a chance too cool down a bit, anywhere from 15-30 minutes for the FP relay to overnight for the distrib, it would eventually restart and run relatively okay until turned off. Having it cough and stumble while you’re trying to restart smells more like the ignition side to me.

Dave, thank you so very much for the tips. Your discriptions are pretty much similar to the symptoms that I am experoencing. In fact I installed a new Bosch Dis cap and rotor a couple of days ago. I will next repalce the relay, hoping that would solve the problem. Again, thank you!
