PV Rear seat belts 444-544 1962

Anybody know if Volvo welded-in attachment bolts and/or holes for seat belts for the back seat of the PV544. If so, where are they? I'm restoring my 1962 and can't seem to see where Volvo may have done something here.

Mine had two welded in nuts right at the base of the driveshaft tunnel near the back of the seat. I used those two but had to weld in two more near the outer rear edge of the back seat. I used a universal retractable three point system by anchoring the retractor on the hat shelf.

As the 544 crowd hasn't yet jumped in with a more definitive answer here, I'll mention that I don't recall my '66 122S (Canadian market) having attachment points for rear seat belts as I similarly wanted to add them. So an earlier 544 almost certainly wouldn't. If you intend to retrofit lap belts you could use a re-inforcing plate on the underside of the chassis, something preferably a bit bigger than a fender washer. It of course wouldn't be tested to DOT standards and you would have to carefully consider whether a buckled frame in an accident could do more harm than good to a rear occupant and in addition not having shoulder belts to meet more modern reqirements.

I've owned several 544's in the past and don't recall seeing rear seat belts (or attaching points) in any of them. I've even made new upholstery for some of them, however my '68 122 definitely has them, but not sure what year they became standard.

That makes sense. In North America, '68 was the first year the venerable 123GT (and likely also the 122S maybe even the 122, I forget) got clamp-over front head rests (not yet integral to the seat frame), so likely the first year that rear seatbelts also became standard, although there could have previously been attachment points for rear belts in other markets. My research suggests that Volvo was the first manufacturer to introduce rear seatbelts in the 1967 Amazon (122) in the Nordic markets.
