Broken sun visor 900

Broke the mount on my drivers side sun visor this morning. Thing is now dangling from the vanity light wire. There does not appear to ba any hope of reparing the mount.

Anybody got a possible source for replacement?

Anybody know where the disconnect is for that wire?

    Dear zimm3,

Hope you're well and stay so. Yes! A replacement visor will have to come from a salvage yard. I'm pretty sure Volvo no longer supplies sun visors.

Be advised that the plastic mounting cans - through which pass the 8mm hex-head screws that secure the visor - come in two depths. These do not interchange. The "low" cans are 1/4" & 3/8" tall. The "high" cans are 1/2" and 5/8" tall. These measurements are approximate.

The visor's wiring connection is under the dashboard. You will have:
    a) to remove the grab handle (if any) or the two screws under the color-matched plastic caps above the driver's window (the caps may be pried-loose with a small, flat-blade screwdriver)
    b) to remove the "A" pillar plastic cover, which is secured by a screw, that is difficult of access. Old plastic is brittle, especially if cold. Be careful when removing the "A" pillar's extension beside the dashboard.
    c) to remove the instrument cluster (see the FAQs for the procedure).

The visor's connector is cable-tied to a wiring harness. on the left side of the instrument cluster's opening. Once you've cut the cable tie, attach a length of string through the opening on the connector, through which passed the cable tie. This "pull cord" will enable you to pull the replacement visor's wiring connector into place.

Starting at the point where the wiring connector comes through the opening in the headliner, tug gently on the wire, while helping the connector to work its way past/around obstacles that you can't see. With patience, the connector will emerge through the headliner's opening.

Leave the pull-string in place until you're ready to put in the replacement visor. Use the string to pull the connector down the "A' column and past obstacles, to its connection point under the dash.

There's no need to use zip ties to secure the visor's wiring connector to the wire harness, to which it was attached at the factory.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

On our 90 740 the wire disconnect was way down like removing the A pillar trim didn’t even expose it. So when I replaced the head liner I opted to snip-n-splice.

Sorry but I can’t help with the mount. Wrecking yard?

I decided I didn't need the vanity mirror light so I opted to snip and not splice. For me it was too much like work having to remove all that potentially brittle trim in order to remove the wire and connector. When they were pulling a used one at the yard I likewise said to just snip it and leave a tail in case I later wanted to splice it.

There's a six sided plastic horizontal finger on the end of the shaft that rotates inside a friction fit metal sleeve to hold it in the up, mid and down positions. With age the plastic starts to fail, the finger first becoming worn round then eventually starting to breaking apart. I destroyed an old one just to see if there was any hope for a DIY repair or parts swap and there is not.

Note to the OP, there are two different visor styles with different mount bases depending on whether or not you have a sunroof, one triangular (w/o sunroof) and one rectangular (w/sunroof). The bases are not interchangeable. Some parts houses are showing different fitment for 1994-on 940 and pre-1994, which may or may not relate to a depth difference someone else here mentioned, but my yard didn't mention a year difference, only the sunroof difference (I have one 940 with and one without sunroof). New beige ones for the driver side appear to still be available in the Volvo parts chain and are not horridly overpriced, just make sure you get the correct fitment. I'll probably soon be in the market again for one for my other 940, but my local yard is saying good used visors, especially beige ones and especially the non-sunroof ones, are basically unobtanium these days.

Dave -still with 940's, prev 740/240/140/120 You'd think I'd have learned by now
