Never done this before. Any strategies or tips on getting a reliable, water tight seal around the windshield would be most appreciated.

Same part, two questions -

Seems that the easiest way to get a good seal would be to glue the rubber gasket to the glass before installing the windshield. Does that work or does the glass usually need to be shifted around in the seal to get it installed ?

Does the sealant go between the gasket and the bodywork from the outside ?

The windshield is back in.

There must be a fair amount of technique involved in using the string ( 1/8" braided nylon or poly rope, please) to pull the gasket over the edge of the body flange. Slapping and thumping the windshield did get it pretty well centered in the opening.

I wound up installing it like mounting a tube type tire. I got the seal over the bottom section of the flange and used a small 'L' shaped tool as the tire iron to work the bead around the rest of the rim.

I don't think I pinched the tube but the gasket does not lie completely flat against the flange on the sides of the windshield frame.

A pneumatic caulking gun makes the job so much easier and neater.

SOP is:

Install rubber seal on windshield with seal seam at bottom center
Install windshield with seal on car
Install sealant between glass and seal from the outside
Install sealant between seal and body from the outside
Install trim and junctions in seal
