More on the 1987 Volvo no start--progress and problems. 200 1987

Got a fuel tank, found a nice used one that is very clean for not too much money; new fuel lines to the main pump, took off the line from the pump to the fuel rail and it is in good shape, I'm going to clean it with some Gumout and compressed air and then quickly blow a little bit of gas throug it to flush the Gumout so it doesn't harm the rubber.

Now the problems.

The main pump and filter have been replaced with new Bosch components. The in tank fuel pump and sending unit, though, are driving me nuts. The pump I got is an MTC from IPD. It is slightly longer than the OEM pump that was on it. No problem, I cut a little bit of the metal tube off of the new aftermarket no-name sending unit and got it to fit by cutting the rubber line down to size. However, the MTC pump has no markings for polarity for the yellow and black wires. Now, the old sending unit was completely disintegrated and nothing on it was recognizable so I couldn't follow the wiring from the old one. Go to Bentley, it tells me with the fuel output to the back of the terminals black goes to the right and the ground yellow to the left. Now, I find out from doing some research that many of these aftermarket sending units have reversed polarity and if so the pump will run backwards. Now I'm paranoid about it. I guess that when I get the tank on I can see if there is anything coming out of the supply line between the tank and the main pump.

My other problem was fuel injectors that were completely clogged and crusted. I have got my hands on some used injectors that I am told are correct for the 87 240 non turbo. They all look the same as the ones I took out but some are black and some are yellow. The ones that came off my car were black. Some of the injectors also are missing the cap over the jet. I can get a set of four of the injectors with caps but they will be a mixture of black and yellow injectors. Sorry I don't have part numbers for them. At this point I probably sound like a moron, but my question is are the injectors interchangeable? Do I run the risk of blowing up the ECM if I put these in? Is it necessary to have that protector cap over the jet?

IF you can, please help me, I don't want to blow the car up. I'm this close to getting it to run I think.

    Hi,

You might want to take a gander at this link to Art Benstein site for more information, than you will ever need, as he takes things apart, in great detail, with pictures!

The section here deals with the in tank pump on several models

    http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm

As far as the injectors I doubt you will blow anything up.
I’m no expert on these but they all do operate in the same manner.
I would check the resistance of the coils with an ohmmeter for a comparison of confidence that they are close and made for a Volvo if the source is unknown to you.
Try to find pictures of the engine in the model year to see if they can show you the color of them in a stock vehicle.
They are probably color coded for fuel delivery amounts or spray patterns in some way to the pulse widths applied.

The factory isn’t the only one that use the disclaimer line, “subject to changes.” Who knows what a PO may have done, like you even? (:-).
The plastic caps are more for protection from getting carbon on the tips and use to come with some “O” ring sealing kits for the body holders into the manifolds.
I found one missing once years ago and never knew it from the way the engine ran, but I know nothing past that!

    Good luck

    Phil

Thanks. I can see right now that paying 3.5 times the price for the genuine Volvo sender might be money well spent. If I can get the car running that may be an investment in the intermediate future. If they are still available by that time.

Another piece of shade tree ingenuity that I hope works, was abandon the copper strip that is used for grounding, mainly because there is no way to fit it up to the new sending unit. I grounded it instead to the fuel return tube using a stainless steel bolt, nut and two washers, one on either side of the wire, and attached at the screw that attaches the plastic base cup to the metal flange on the tube. I didn't see any other way to do this. I tried to find some other way to do it but there was none, no way to make it fit. I just hope I get a ground that is good enough.

Also many thanks for the advice on the injectors. They are for sure from a Volvo 240. I'm going to try to make the injectors work, if not I see them in cheap aftermarket that will work until and if I can find something better. I need to get the car running and roadworthy first and then get it right.

        More on the 1987 Volvo Injectors--Seal Kits.--InTank pump 200 1987

        Injectors--87
If they are for the 87 --- the color is not an issue. I assume that you got them from Voluparts, as you said you were going to drive to Atlanta.

My 87...replacing the Injector Seals part of the 60K intervals service.
        Seal Kit pn 134693.

        https://store.voluparts.com/1346393-fuel-injector-seal-kit/

I pulled the injectors and replaced the O-Rings---the injectors did not have the Yellow Cap, so I didn't use them---still in a box of carb and FI seal kits.
I just used 2 O-rings for each injector

FWIW --- IPD sells 2 different Seal Kits for those injectors. One of them only has the O-Rings---the Kit is for 4 injectors, unlike the single Injector Kits than come with extra parts that you don't need.

IPD single Kit with 2 parts I did not use--is as the one from Voluparts.

If you have taken Phil's advice and looked at Art's page re the Intank pump, you will find that he uses ---Airtex E8778 is, as of Dec. 2015 (and still as of Sept. 2019), my choice of tank pump,
