1992 245 wagon Transmission Mount

How do you get the transmission mount off the support cross member? I am talking about.

I can't find the right wrench or socket that will work inside the cross member.

Do you mean manual or automatic transmission

For the nut under the cross member hollow, a deep well 17 or 15 does it. Some makes of the M47 II mount have long threaded studs.

Or you have automatic transmission?

Where do you get a stiffer mount?

Also all seven 240s I had and have include the robber bushing grommet thingies at all four corners.

I could not get the deep socket on this bolt


Where do you get a stiffer mount?

A brand new not oil soaked one.

Also all seven 240s I had and have include the robber bushing grommet thingies at all four corners.

This 92 does not!

The old mount I took off looked just like the ones you linked

Maybe 1992 Auto does not use the rubber grommet at the four corners of the transmission support bracket or cross member. My 1992 M47 II does.

I have to replace all three mounts on the 1991. The 1990 li'l red DL wagon has ten year old Pro Parts Sweden mounts. The remain solid, yet that engine is not a leaker.

I thought you had an M46/M47 equipped 240.

Hope you and the family of folks and Volvos are all aces!

Maybe 1992 Auto does not use the rubber grommet at the four corners of the transmission support bracket or cross member. My 1992 M47 II does.

My 93 has the M47 and may have the rubber supports but the 92 wagon automatic does not.

I have to replace all three mounts on the 1991. The 1990 li'l red DL wagon has ten year old Pro Parts Sweden mounts. The remain solid, yet that engine is not a leaker.

I probably destroyed the drivers side motor mount during the intake manifold gasket replacement, so I did also have to do that mount also. Very hard to see the drivers side mount unless you crawl under and look.

Maybe you might want to consider using the trans crossmember from the 260 models. They have rubber bushings between the crossmember and frame as the 260 was an upscale model. - Dave

I'll keep that in mind. My vibration may have been caused by the parking brake being partially set!

I haven't changed one in a while but as I recall -- I place a jack under the transmission (with a block of wood as a cushion) -- remove the bottom nut from the mount--remove the 4 bolts (crossmember to frame)--drop the crossmember out of the way--remove the 2 bolts (bracket to transmission) -- drop the combo mount/bracket--remove the top mount "stud nut". Reverse order for installation. - Dave

That's what I did on my 92 245 automatic about two years ago. Very accurate description of the procedure

I have done all that, the problem is getting a socket over the nut that is inside the crossmember. The long socket is at an angle where it doesn't slip onto the nut. The short one does not does not go over the long stud. Wrenches don't fit!

That seems to be a strange problem to have. The nut should be a 17mm on older cars (but may have changed to 15mm on later cars). I can't explain how you could have something different but have you tried equivalent sizes in "fractional" tools. 17mm is close to 11/16th" and 15mm is close to 5/8ths". Other alternatives--lock pliers or smacking at an angle with a chisel to the edge of the nut to loosen it. Sorry I can't be of more help. - Dave

Thanks Dave I have tried all that, and have moved on to the sawsall and dremel!

I have done several of these too but never with the pains this one is giving me. I was already to get one at the junk yard but 240's rarely can be found anymore.

The replacement Meyle mount looks nothing like the one that was on there.

Now I'm reminded that my local good parts store sent me the rubber mount that was specified, but when I got to work it wasn't the same as what I was removing, it didn't match. I had to talk to them for a while and get a different number part delivered which was correct.
