trying to fix fuel pump.. 900 1993

From what I can see the Fuel pump housing has a slash mark on it that should line up w the arrow on the top of the tank..? I got the housing back into the tank & now its different than how I remember it? or the pics on here.
I have to take off the rusted clamp on the delivery hose to move it to fit the intake on housing, top. Now I have to see how the other hoses will attach..
Which 1 get s which hose??

Dear Blindboy,

Hope you're well and stay so. The fuel send unit's round barrel needs to end up: (a) pointing straight down and (b) just forward of the rear wall of the fuel tank.

To get it there, point the send unit's barrel towards "10 o'clock" as you insert the barrel into the fuel tank's opening. Turn the send housing's top clockwise, and tilt the housing rearwards (towards the rear of the car).

I realize this is counter-intuitive. But the "tilt" lifts the barrel so that it will clear an in-tank, anti-slosh baffle.

Once the barrel has cleared the baffle (which occurs once the barrel faces 2 o'clock, tilt the housing forward while turning the housing until the barrel is at the 6 o'clock position. At that point, the barrel is: (a) pointing straight down; (b) precisely parallel with the rear wall of the fuel tank.

The large-diameter filler hose - which must be completely removed to get enough room to reinstall the fuel pump send unit - goes on the large opening in the send unit's housing.

Of the two smaller hoses (1/4" internal diameter), the hose to the fuel filter (and thence to the engine) goes on the taller of the two steel pipes. The hose - that returns excess fuel from the fuel injectors to the tank - goes on the shorter of the two steel pipes. If there's a third hose (3/8" internal diameter), it goes on the black plastic tube.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
