V70 Fuel Door Lockout! S90-V90 2001

So I have an '01 V70 from the Belgium production plant. Since buying it from the original owner in '16, it never locked , just closed and I would open by hand. Suddenly, I am at a quarter tank, pull into the gas station and to my surprise, it's locked. I use the central locking - no luck, start car, no luck. I do not have the gas lid button - rather I have buttons for the front and rear fog lights.

I saw the tutorial on YouTube about getting to the emergency manual option but what could be causing the lid to not open with the central locking system?

Any ideas?

    V70 Fuel Door Lockout! S90-V90 2001

When we had a fuel door problem with one of our 850s, I learned two things.

To remove panels to reach the mechanism, I had to start in the middle of the top of the hatch opening. I also had to remove more panels than I first thought.

Secondly, the problem was caused by the grommet around the locking pin, it was not fully installed and was curled up on one side.

I found the same problem on one of our other 850s, but I could correct it by poking it a bit with a dental tool to uncurl the grommet.

When you get things apart, check for this problem.

I checked the fuse (#8) in the rear panel first. My central looking no longer works in the rear nor for the gas door so this seemed liked a definite possibility. Didn't work. (PS: Is there a reason besides the fuse that my central locking no longer works on the rear/gas door?)

Anyway, ended up removing rear panels, reaching in and just manually opening. It's strange that for five years the door never actually locked and then suddenly, it did.

There is likely a problem with the linkage. Have someone toggle the door locks while you look at the linkage. It has to engage/disengage with the gas cap door.

Check fuse #8 Central locking rear doors/fuel filler door 15A

    In the rear fuse box.

If the fuse is OK, then you will need to remove panels to gain access to the motor and lever that opens the filler door.

The gas tank is locked with a DC lock motor item 6/37 on the schematic.

Lock motors move a link about an 1 inch, back and forth, to lock the doors and gas cap.
In the 850, and probably with your V70 there's a release link to manually free the gas cap cover, check the operators manual for this info.

You probably need to remove some trim inside by the gas cap to see what happened. The lock motor has only +12VDC and a ground, so you can check that there's power to the lock motor connector with a voltmeter.

The motor could be kaput, or needing adjustment. If the lock motor is working, there may be some adjustment to get it to latch and unlatch once you can see it. Maybe the linkage is binding/hung up.

Post back with some good news.

    Bill
